Introduction

1 The words of Amos, who was among the (A)sheepherders from (B)Tekoa, which he (a)envisioned in visions concerning Israel in the days of (C)Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of (D)Jeroboam son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the (E)earthquake.

1 The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

1 The words of Amos, who was one of the sheep breeders(a)(A) from Tekoa(B)—what he saw regarding Israel in the days of Uzziah,(C) king of Judah, and Jeroboam(D) son of Jehoash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.(E)

1 The words of Amos, who was among the sheep breeders of Tekoa, which he spoke concerning Israel during the reign of Uzziah, king of Judah and during the reign of Joash's son Jeroboam, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

1 The words of Amos, who was among the sheepherders of (a)Tekoa, which he saw [in a divine revelation] concerning (b)Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.(A)

Judgment On Israel's Neighbors

2 He said,“The (F)Lord roars from ZionAnd from Jerusalem He utters His voice;And the shepherds’ (G)pasture grounds mourn,And the (b)(H)summit of Carmel dries up.”

2 And he said, The LORD will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither.

2 He said:The Lord roars(F) from Zionand raises His voice from Jerusalem;the pastures of the shepherds mourn,(b)(G)and the summit of Carmel(H) withers.

2 He said, "From Zion the LORD roars, and from Jerusalem he shouts aloud. The shepherds' pastures will languish, and Carmel's summit will wither."

2 And he said,“The Lord thunders and roars from Zion [in judgment]And utters His voice from Jerusalem;Then the pastures of the shepherds mourn,And the summit of [Mount] Carmel dries up [because of God’s judgment].”(B)

Damascus Will Be Judged For Its Crimes

3 Thus says the Lord,“For (I)three transgressions of (J)Damascus and for fourI will not (c)revoke its punishment,Because they threshed Gilead with implements of sharp iron.

3 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron:

3 The Lord says:I will not relent from punishing Damascus(I)for three crimes, even four,(J)because they threshed Gilead with iron sledges.

3 This is what the LORD says: "For three transgressions of Damascus and now for a fourth I will not turn away; because they have trampled down Gilead with ironclad threshing sleds.

3 Thus says the Lord,“For three transgressions of Damascus and for four (multiplied delinquencies)I shall not reverse its punishment or revoke My word concerning it,Because they have threshed Gilead [east of the Jordan River] with sharp iron sledges [having spikes that crushed and shredded].(C)

4 “So I will send fire upon the house of HazaelAnd it will consume the citadels of (K)Ben-hadad.

4 But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, which shall devour the palaces of Benhadad.

4 Therefore, I will send fire against Hazael’s palace,and it will consume Ben-hadad’s(K) citadels.

4 So I will send down fire upon the house of Hazael, and it will devour the palaces of Ben-hadad.

4 “So I will send a fire [of war, conquest, and destruction] upon the house of (c)Hazael,And it shall devour the palaces and strongholds of (d)Ben-hadad (Hazael’s son).

5 “I will also (L)break the gate bar of Damascus,And cut off the inhabitant from the (d)valley of Aven,And him who holds the scepter, from Beth-eden;So the people of Aram will go exiled to (M)Kir,”Says the Lord.

5 I will break also the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of Aven, and him that holdeth the sceptre from the house of Eden: and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith the LORD.

5 I will break down the gates(c)(L) of Damascus.I will cut off the ruler from the Valley of Aven,and the one who wields the scepter from Beth-eden.The people of Aram will be exiled to Kir.(M)The Lord has spoken.

5 I will shatter the gate bars of Damascus, and I will cut off the residents of the Aven Valley, along with the one who holds the scepter from Beth-eden; and the people of Aram will be exiled to Kir," says the LORD.

5 “I also will break the bar [of the gate] of Damascus,And cut off and destroy the inhabitant from the Valley of Aven (Wickedness),And the ruler who holds the scepter, from Beth-eden (Damascus);And the people of Aram [conquered by the Assyrians] will go into exile to (e)Kir,”Says the Lord.(D)

Gaza Will Be Judged For Its Crimes

6 Thus says the Lord,“For three transgressions of (N)Gaza and for fourI will not revoke its punishment,Because they deported an entire populationTo (O)deliver it up to Edom.

6 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom:

6 The Lord says:I will not relent from punishing Gaza(N)for three crimes, even four,because they exiled a whole community,handing them over to Edom.

6 This is what the LORD says: "For three transgressions of Gaza and now for a fourth I will not turn away; because they exiled the entire population, delivering them to Edom.

6 Thus says the Lord,“For three transgressions of Gaza [in Philistia] and for four (multiplied delinquencies)I will not reverse its punishment or revoke My word concerning it,Because [as slave traders] they took captive the entire [Jewish] population [of defenseless Judean border villages, of which none was spared]And deported them to Edom [for the slave trade].(E)

7 “So I will send fire upon the wall of GazaAnd it will consume her citadels.

7 But I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza, which shall devour the palaces thereof:

7 Therefore, I will send fire against the walls of Gaza,and it will consume its citadels.

7 So I will send down fire upon the wall of Gaza, and it will devour their fortified citadels;

7 “So I will send a fire [of war, conquest, and destruction] on the wall of GazaAnd it shall consume her citadels.

8 “I will also cut off the inhabitant from (P)Ashdod,And him who holds the scepter, from (Q)Ashkelon;I will even (e)unleash My (f)power upon Ekron,And the remnant of the (R)Philistines will perish,”Says the Lord (g)God.

8 And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him that holdeth the sceptre from Ashkelon, and I will turn mine hand against Ekron: and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord GOD.

8 I will cut off the ruler from Ashdod,(O)and the one who wields the scepter from Ashkelon.(P)I will also turn My hand against Ekron,and the remainder of the Philistines(Q) will perish.The Lord God has spoken.

8 and I will cut off the inhabitants of Ashdod, along with Ashkelon's ruler. I will turn to attack Ekron, and the rest of the Philistines will die," says the Lord GOD.

8 “And I will cut off and destroy the inhabitants from Ashdod,And the ruler who holds the scepter, from Ashkelon;And I will unleash My power and turn My hand [in judgment] against Ekron,And the rest of the Philistines [in Gath and the towns dependent on these four Philistine cities] shall die,”Says the Lord God.(F)

Tyre Will Be Judged For Its Crimes

9 Thus says the Lord,“For three transgressions of (S)Tyre and for fourI will not revoke its punishment,Because they delivered up an entire population to EdomAnd did not remember the covenant of (h)(T)brotherhood.

9 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Tyrus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant:

9 The Lord says:I will not relent from punishing Tyre(R)for three crimes, even four,because they handed overa whole community of exiles to Edomand broke(d) a treaty of brotherhood.(S)

9 This is what the LORD says: "For three transgressions of Tyre and now for a fourth I will not turn away; because they delivered the entire population to Edom, and did not remember their covenant with their relatives.

9 Thus says the Lord,“For three transgressions of Tyre and for four (multiplied delinquencies)I will not reverse its punishment or revoke My word concerning it,Because they [as middlemen] deported an entire [Jewish] population to EdomAnd did not [seriously] remember their covenant of brotherhood.(G)

10 “So I will (U)send fire upon the wall of TyreAnd it will consume her citadels.”

10 But I will send a fire on the wall of Tyrus, which shall devour the palaces thereof.

10 Therefore, I will send fire(T) against the walls of Tyre,and it will consume its citadels.

10 So I will send down fire upon the wall of Tyre, and it will devour their fortified citadels."

10 “So I will send a fire [of war, conquest, and destruction] on the wall of Tyre,And it shall consume her citadels.”

Edom Will Be Judged For Its Crimes

11 Thus says the Lord,“For three transgressions of (V)Edom and for fourI will not revoke its punishment,Because he (W)pursued his brother with the sword,While he (i)stifled his compassion;His anger also (X)tore continually,And he maintained his fury forever.

11 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever:

11 The Lord says:I will not relent from punishing Edom(U)for three crimes, even four,because he pursued his brother with the sword.(V)He stifled his compassion,his anger tore at them(W) continually,and he harbored his rage incessantly.

11 This is what the LORD says: "For three transgressions of Edom and now for a fourth I will not turn away; because he pursued his brother with a sword, refusing to be compassionate. His anger was raging continuously; he kept up his unending wrath.

11 Thus says the Lord,“For three transgressions of Edom [the descendants of Esau] and for four (multiplied delinquencies)I will not reverse its punishment or revoke My word concerning it,Because he pursued his brother Jacob (Israel) with the sword,Corrupting and stifling his compassions and casting off all mercy;His destructive anger raged continually,And he maintained [and nurtured] his wrath forever.

12 “So I will send fire upon (Y)TemanAnd it will consume the citadels of Bozrah.”

12 But I will send a fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.

12 Therefore, I will send fire against Teman,(X)and it will consume the citadels of Bozrah.

12 So I will send down fire upon Teman, and it will devour the fortified citadels of Bozrah."

12 “So I will send a fire [of war, conquest, and destruction] upon Teman,And it shall consume the citadels of Bozrah [in Edom].”

Ammon Will Be Judged For Its Crimes

13 Thus says the Lord,“For three transgressions of the sons of (Z)Ammon and for fourI will not revoke its punishment,Because they (AA)ripped open the pregnant women of GileadIn order to (AB)enlarge their borders.

13 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border:

13 The Lord says:I will not relent from punishing the Ammonites(Y)for three crimes, even four,because they ripped openthe pregnant women of Gilead(Z)in order to enlarge their territory.(AA)

13 This is what the LORD says: "For three transgressions of the Ammonites and now for a fourth I will not turn away; because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead in order to enlarge their national borders.

13 Thus says the Lord,“For three transgressions of the children of (f)Ammon and for four (multiplied delinquencies)I will not reverse its punishment or revoke My word concerning it,Because the Ammonites have ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead,That they might enlarge their border.

14 “So I will kindle a fire on the wall of (AC)RabbahAnd it will consume her citadelsAmid (j)(AD)war cries on the day of battle,And a (AE)storm on the day of tempest.

14 But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour the palaces thereof, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind:

14 Therefore, I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah,(AB)and it will consume its citadels.There will be shouting on the day of battle(AC)and a violent wind on the day of the storm.(AD)

14 So I will send down fire upon the wall of Rabbah, and it will devour their fortified citadels with an alarm sounding in the time of battle, and with a whirlwind in the time of storm.

14 “So I will kindle a fire [of war, conquest, and destruction] on the wall of Rabbah [in Ammon]And it shall devour its strongholdsAmid war cries and shouts of alarm on the day of battle,And a tempest on the day of the whirlwind [when the enemy captures the city].

15 “Their (AF)king will go into exile,He and his princes together,” says the Lord.

15 And their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together, saith the LORD.

15 Their king and his princeswill go into exile together.(AE)The Lord has spoken.

15 Their king will go into captivity he and his princes together," says the LORD.

15 “Their king shall go into exile,He and his princes together,” says the Lord.
