Deuteronomy 32

Song Of Moses

1 "Give ear, O heavens, and let me speak; And let the earth hear the words of my mouth.

1 Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.

1 Hear, heavens, and I will speak! Listen, earth, to the words of my mouth!

1 Give ear, O heavens, and I [Moses] will speak; and let the earth hear the words of my mouth.

2 "Let my teaching drop as the rain, My speech distill as the dew, As the droplets on the fresh grass And as the showers on the herb.

2 My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:

2 May my instructions descend like rain and may my words flow like dew, as light rain upon the grass, and as showers upon new plants.

2 My message shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the light rain upon the tender grass, and as the showers upon the herb.

3 "For I proclaim the name of the LORD; Ascribe greatness to our God!

3 Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.

3 For I'll proclaim the name of our LORD. Ascribe greatness to our God!

3 For I will proclaim the name [and presence] of the Lord. Concede and ascribe greatness to our God.

4 "The Rock! His work is perfect, For all His ways are just; A God of faithfulness and without injustice, Righteous and upright is He.

4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

4 Flawless is the work of the Rock, because all his ways are just. A faithful God never unjust righteous and upright is he.

4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect, for all His ways are law and justice. A God of faithfulness without breach or deviation, just and right is He.

5 "They have acted corruptly toward Him, They are not His children, because of their defect; But are a perverse and crooked generation.

5 They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation.

5 But those who are not his children acted corruptly against him; they are a defective and perverted generation.

5 They [Israel] have spoiled themselves. They are not sons to Him, and that is their blemish -- "a perverse and crooked generation!

6 "Do you thus repay the LORD, O foolish and unwise people? Is not He your Father who has bought you? He has made you and established you.

6 Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee?

6 This is not the way to repay the LORD, is it, you foolish and witless people? Is he not your father, who bought you, formed you, and established you?

6 Do you thus repay the Lord, you foolish and senseless people? Is not He your Father Who acquired you for His own, Who made and established you [as a nation]?

7 "Remember the days of old, Consider the years of all generations. Ask your father, and he will inform you, Your elders, and they will tell you.

7 Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee.

7 Remember the days of old, reflect on the years of previous generations. Ask your father, and he'll tell you; your elders will inform you.

7 Remember the days of old; consider the years of many generations. Ask your father and he will show you, your elders, and they will tell you.

8 "When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, When He separated the sons of man, He set the boundaries of the peoples According to the number of the sons of Israel.

8 When the most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.

8 When the Most High gave nations as their inheritance, when he separated the human race, he set boundaries for the people according to the number of the children of God.

8 When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when He separated the children of men, He set the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the Israelites.

9 "For the LORD'S portion is His people; Jacob is the allotment of His inheritance.

9 For the LORD'S portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.

9 For the LORD's portion is his people; Jacob is his allotted portion.

9 For the Lord's portion is His people; Jacob (Israel) is the lot of His inheritance.

10 "He found him in a desert land, And in the howling waste of a wilderness; He encircled him, He cared for him, He guarded him as the pupil of His eye.

10 He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.

10 The LORD found him in a desert land, in a barren, eerie wilderness. He surrounded, cared for, and guarded him as the pupil of his eye.

10 He found him in a desert land, in the howling void of the wilderness; He kept circling around him, He scanned him [penetratingly], He kept him as the pupil of His eye.

11 "Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, That hovers over its young, He spread His wings and caught them, He carried them on His pinions.

11 As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings:

11 Like an eagle stirs its nest, hovering near its young, spreading out his wings to take him and carry him on his pinions,

11 As an eagle that stirs up her nest, that flutters over her young, He spread abroad His wings and He took them, He bore them on His pinions.

12 "The LORD alone guided him, And there was no foreign god with him.

12 So the LORD alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.

12 the LORD alone guided him. There was no foreign god with him.

12 So the Lord alone led him; there was no foreign god with Him.

13 "He made him ride on the high places of the earth, And he ate the produce of the field; And He made him suck honey from the rock, And oil from the flinty rock,

13 He made him ride on the high places of the earth, that he might eat the increase of the fields; and he made him to suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock;

13 He mounted him on a high place above the earth, feeding him from the produce of the field. He nourished him with honey from the rock and with oil from the flint rock,

13 He made Israel ride on the high places of the earth, and he ate the increase of the field; and He made him suck honey out of the rock and oil out of the flinty rock,

14 Curds of cows, and milk of the flock, With fat of lambs, And rams, the breed of Bashan, and goats, With the finest of the wheat-- And of the blood of grapes you drank wine.

14 Butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the fat of kidneys of wheat; and thou didst drink the pure blood of the grape.

14 with curds from cattle and with milk from sheep, with the fat of lambs, with rams from Bashan, with the fat of goats, with the finest of wheat and from the juice of grapes you drank wine.

14 Butter and curds of the herd and milk of the flock, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and he-goats, with the finest of the wheat; and you drank wine of the blood of the grape.

Israel's Rebellion

15 "But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked-- You are grown fat, thick, and sleek-- Then he forsook God who made him, And scorned the Rock of his salvation.

15 But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

15 Jacob dined until satisfied; Jeshurun grew fat and kicked. He grew fat, coarse, and gross, so that he abandoned the God who made him and spurned the Rock that was his salvation.

15 But Jeshurun (Israel) grew fat and kicked. You became fat, you grew thick, you were gorged and sleek! Then he forsook God Who made him and forsook and despised the Rock of his salvation.

16 "They made Him jealous with strange gods; With abominations they provoked Him to anger.

16 They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger.

16 They provoked him to jealousy over foreigners and to anger over detestable things.

16 They provoked Him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations they provoked Him to anger.

17 "They sacrificed to demons who were not God, To gods whom they have not known, New gods who came lately, Whom your fathers did not dread.

17 They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.

17 They sacrificed to demons not to the real God gods whom they didn't know, new neighbors who had recently appeared, whom your ancestors never feared.

17 They sacrificed to demons, not to God -- "to gods whom they knew not, to new gods lately come up, whom your fathers never knew or feared.

18 "You neglected the Rock who begot you, And forgot the God who gave you birth.

18 Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.

18 You neglected the Rock that fathered you; you abandoned God, who was awaiting your birth.

18 Of the Rock Who bore you you were unmindful; you forgot the God Who travailed in your birth.

A Word Of Judgment

19 "The LORD saw this, and spurned them Because of the provocation of His sons and daughters.

19 And when the LORD saw it, he abhorred them, because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters.

19 The LORD saw it and became jealous, provoked by his sons and daughters.

19 And the Lord saw it and He spurned and rejected them, out of indignation with His sons and His daughters.

20 "Then He said, 'I will hide My face from them, I will see what their end shall be; For they are a perverse generation, Sons in whom is no faithfulness.

20 And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith.

20 So he said: "Let me hide my face from them. I will observe what their end will be, because they are a perverted generation, children within whom there is no loyalty.

20 And He said, I will hide My face from them, I will see what their end will be; for they are a perverse generation, children in whom is no faithfulness.

21 'They have made Me jealous with what is not God; They have provoked Me to anger with their idols So I will make them jealous with those who are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation,

21 They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

21 They provoked me to jealousy over non-gods, and to be angry over their vanity. Now I'll provoke them to jealousy over a non-people; and over a foolish nation I'll provoke them to anger.

21 They have moved Me to jealousy with what is not God; they have angered Me with their idols. So I will move them to jealousy with those who are not a people; I will anger them with a foolish nation.

22 For a fire is kindled in My anger, And burns to the lowest part of Sheol, And consumes the earth with its yield, And sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

22 For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.

22 For a fire breaks out in my anger burning to the deepest part of the afterlife, consuming the earth and its produce and igniting the foundations of the mountains.

22 For a fire is kindled by My anger, and it burns to the depths of Sheol, devours the earth with its increase, and sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

23 'I will heap misfortunes on them; I will use My arrows on them.

23 I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will spend mine arrows upon them.

23 I'll bury them in misfortunes and bring them to an end with my arrows.

23 And I will heap evils upon them; I will spend My arrows upon them.

24 'They will be wasted by famine, and consumed by plague And bitter destruction; And the teeth of beasts I will send upon them, With the venom of crawling things of the dust.

24 They shall be burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust.

24 Emaciated from famine, feverish from plague, and destroyed by bitterness, I'll send fanged beasts against them, along with poisonous snakes that glide through the dust.

24 They shall be wasted with hunger and devoured with burning heat and poisonous pestilence; and the teeth of beasts will I send against them, with the poison of crawling things of the dust.

25 'Outside the sword will bereave, And inside terror-- Both young man and virgin, The nursling with the man of gray hair.

25 The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs.

25 Outside, the sword will cause bereavement; within, there will be terror for the young man and virgin alike, also for the nursing infant and the aged man."

25 From without the sword shall bereave, and in the chambers shall be terror, destroying both young man and virgin, the sucking child with the man of gray hairs.

The Weakness Of Other Gods

26 'I would have said, "I will cut them to pieces, I will remove the memory of them from men,"

26 I said, I would scatter them into corners, I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men:

26 "I said, "I will scatter them, erasing their memory from the human race,

26 I said, I would scatter them afar and I would have made the remembrance of them to cease from among men,

27 Had I not feared the provocation by the enemy, That their adversaries would misjudge, That they would say, "Our hand is triumphant, And the LORD has not done all this."'

27 Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, lest their adversaries should behave themselves strangely, and lest they should say, Our hand is high, and the LORD hath not done all this.

27 if it weren't for dreading the taunting of their enemies otherwise, their adversary might misinterpret and say, "Our power is great. It isn't the LORD who made all of this happen."'"

27 Had I not feared the provocation of the foe, lest their enemies misconstrue it and lest they should say, Our own hand has prevailed; all this was not the work of the Lord.

28 "For they are a nation lacking in counsel, And there is no understanding in them.

28 For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them.

28 They are a nation devoid of purpose and without insight.

28 For they are a nation void of counsel, and there is no understanding in them.

29 "Would that they were wise, that they understood this, That they would discern their future!

29 O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!

29 O, that they were wise to understand this and consider their future!

29 O that they were wise and would see through this [present triumph] to their ultimate fate!

30 "How could one chase a thousand, And two put ten thousand to flight, Unless their Rock had sold them, And the LORD had given them up?

30 How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up?

30 How can one person chase a thousand of them and two put a myriad to flight, unless their Rock delivers them and the LORD gives them up?

30 How could one have chased a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the Lord had delivered them up?

31 "Indeed their rock is not like our Rock, Even our enemies themselves judge this.

31 For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.

31 For their rock isn't like our Rock, as even our enemies admit.

31 For their rock is not like our Rock, even our enemies themselves judge this.

32 "For their vine is from the vine of Sodom, And from the fields of Gomorrah; Their grapes are grapes of poison, Their clusters, bitter.

32 For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter:

32 Instead, their vine is from the vines of Sodom and the vineyards of Gomorrah. Their grapes are poisonous, their clusters bitter.

32 For their vine comes from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of [poisonous] gall, their clusters are bitter.

33 "Their wine is the venom of serpents, And the deadly poison of cobras.

33 Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.

33 Their wine is the venom of serpents, a poisonous cobra.

33 Their wine is the [furious] venom of serpents, and the pitiless poison of vipers.

34 'Is it not laid up in store with Me, Sealed up in My treasuries?

34 Is not this laid up in store with me, and sealed up among my treasures?

34 "Is this not kept in reserve, sealed up with me in my treasury?

34 Is not this laid up in store with Me, sealed up in My treasuries?

35 'Vengeance is Mine, and retribution, In due time their foot will slip; For the day of their calamity is near, And the impending things are hastening upon them.'

35 To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.

35 To me belong vengeance and recompense. In due time their feet will slip, because their time of calamity is near and the things prepared for them draw near.

35 Vengeance is Mine, and recompense, in the time when their foot shall slide; for the day of their disaster is at hand and their doom comes speedily.

36 "For the LORD will vindicate His people, And will have compassion on His servants, When He sees that their strength is gone, And there is none remaining, bond or free.

36 For the LORD shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants, when he seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left.

36 For the LORD will vindicate his people and bring comfort to his servants, because he will observe that their power has waned, when neither prisoner nor free person remain.

36 For the Lord will revoke sentence for His people and relent for His servants' sake when He sees that their power is gone and none remains, whether bond or free.

37 "And He will say, 'Where are their gods, The rock in which they sought refuge?

37 And he shall say, Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted,

37 "He will say, "Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge?

37 And He will say, Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge,

38 'Who ate the fat of their sacrifices, And drank the wine of their drink offering? Let them rise up and help you, Let them be your hiding place!

38 Which did eat the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offerings? let them rise up and help you, and be your protection.

38 Who ate the fat of their offerings and drank the wine that was their drink offering? Let them rise and help you and be your hiding place!'

38 Who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their drink offering? Let them rise up and help you, let them be your protection!

The Vindication Of The Lord

39 'See now that I, I am He, And there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life I have wounded and it is I who heal, And there is no one who can deliver from My hand.

39 See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.

39 "Look now! I AM, and there is no other god besides me. I myself cause death and I sustain life; I wound severely and I also heal; from my power no one can deliver.

39 See now that I, I am He, and there is no god beside Me; I kill and I make alive, I wound and I heal, and there is none who can deliver out of My hand.

40 'Indeed, I lift up My hand to heaven, And say, as I live forever,

40 For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever.

40 "I solemnly swear to heaven I say "As certainly as I'm alive and living forever,

40 For I lift up My hand to heaven and swear, As I live forever,

41 If I sharpen My flashing sword, And My hand takes hold on justice, I will render vengeance on My adversaries, And I will repay those who hate Me.

41 If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me.

41 I'll whet my shining sword, with my hands in firm grasp of judgment. I'll show vengeance on my adversary and repay those who keep on hating me.

41 If I whet My lightning sword and My hand takes hold on judgment, I will wreak vengeance on My foes and recompense those who hate Me.

42 'I will make My arrows drunk with blood, And My sword will devour flesh, With the blood of the slain and the captives, From the long-haired leaders of the enemy.'

42 I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy.

42 I'll make my arrows drunk with blood. My sword will devour flesh, along with the blood of the slain, and I'll take their enemy leaders captive.'

42 I will make My arrows drunk with blood, and My sword shall devour flesh, with the blood of the slain and the captives, from the long-haired heads of the foe.

43 "Rejoice, O nations, with His people; For He will avenge the blood of His servants, And will render vengeance on His adversaries, And will atone for His land and His people."

43 Rejoice, O ye nations, with his people: for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, and to his people.

43 "Sing for joy, nations! Sing for joy, people who belong to him! For he'll avenge the blood of his servants, turn on his adversary, and cleanse both his land and his people."

43 Rejoice [with] His people, O you nations, for He avenges the blood of His servants, and vengeance He inflicts on His foes and clears guilt from the land of His people.

Moses Is Allowed To See Canaan

44 Then Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he, with Joshua the son of Nun.

44 And Moses came and spake all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he, and Hoshea the son of Nun.

44 So Moses and Nun's son Joshua came and recited all the words of this song while the people were assembled.

44 And Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he and Hoshea (Joshua) son of Nun.

Moses' Final Instructions

45 When Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel,

45 And Moses made an end of speaking all these words to all Israel:

45 When Moses had finished addressing all of these words to all Israel,

45 And when Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel,

46 he said to them, "Take to your heart all the words with which I am warning you today, which you shall command your sons to observe carefully, even all the words of this law.

46 And he said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words which I testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.

46 he told them, "Take to heart my entire testimony against you today. Command your children to observe carefully every word of this Law,

46 He said to them, Set your [minds and] hearts on all the words which I command you this day, that you may command them to your children, that they may be watchful to do all the words of this law.

47 "For it is not an idle word for you; indeed it is your life And by this word you will prolong your days in the land, which you are about to cross the Jordan to possess."

47 For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life: and through this thing ye shall prolong your days in the land, whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.

47 because they're not just empty words for you they are your very life. Through these instructions you will live long in the land that you are about to cross over the Jordan River to possess."

47 For it is not an empty and worthless trifle for you; it is your [very] life. By it you shall live long in the land which you are going over the Jordan to possess.

Instructions Concerning Moses' Death

48 The LORD spoke to Moses that very same day, saying,

48 And the LORD spake unto Moses that selfsame day, saying,

48 Later that day, the LORD told Moses,

48 And the Lord said to Moses that same day,

49 "Go up to this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab opposite Jericho, and look at the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israel for a possession.

49 Get thee up into this mountain Abarim, unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession:

49 "Ascend this Abarim mountain range toward Mount Nebo in the land of Moab across from Jericho, and look out over the land of Canaan that I'm about to give to the Israelis as a possession.

49 Get up into this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, opposite Jericho, and look at the land of Canaan which I give to the Israelites for a possession.

50 "Then die on the mountain where you ascend, and be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people,

50 And die in the mount whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people; as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor, and was gathered unto his people:

50 You will die on the mountain that you are about to ascend and be taken to be with your ancestors, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor and was taken to be with his ancestors.

50 And die on the mountain which you ascend and be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people,

51 because you broke faith with Me in the midst of the sons of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin, because you did not treat Me as holy in the midst of the sons of Israel.

51 Because ye trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of MeribahKadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye sanctified me not in the midst of the children of Israel.

51 Both of you acted unfaithfully against me among the Israelis at Meribah-kadesh in the desert of Zin, when you failed to uphold my holiness among the Israelis.

51 Because you broke faith with Me in the midst of the Israelites at the waters of Meribah-kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin and because you did not set Me apart as holy in the midst of the Israelites.

52 "For you shall see the land at a distance, but you shall not go there, into the land which I am giving the sons of Israel."

52 Yet thou shalt see the land before thee; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel.

52 You'll see the land from a distance, but you won't be able to enter the land that I am about to give to the Israelis."

52 For you shall see the land opposite you at a distance, but you shall not go there, into the land which I give the Israelites.
