1 Then Job responded,
1 But Job answered and said,
1 Then Job answered:
1 In reply, Job responded:
1 But Job answered,
2 "What a help you are to the weak! How you have saved the arm without strength!
2 How hast thou helped him that is without power? how savest thou the arm that hath no strength?
2 How you have helped the powerless and delivered the arm that is weak!
2 "What a help you are to the weak! How powerfully you deliver those without strength!
2 How you have helped him who is without power! How you have sustained the arm that is without strength!
3 "What counsel you have given to one without wisdom! What helpful insight you have abundantly provided!
3 How hast thou counselled him that hath no wisdom? and how hast thou plentifully declared the thing as it is?
3 How you have counseled the unwise and thoroughly explained [the path to] success!
3 What counsel you provide to the fool! What insight you provide so abundantly!
3 How you have counseled him who has no wisdom! And how plentifully you have declared to him sound knowledge!
4 "To whom have you uttered words? And whose spirit was expressed through you?
4 To whom hast thou uttered words? and whose spirit came from thee?
4 Who did you speak these words to? Whose breath came out of your [mouth]?
4 Who helped you say all of this? Who inspired you?"
4 With whose assistance have you uttered these words? And whose spirit [inspired what] came forth from you?
5 "The departed spirits tremble Under the waters and their inhabitants.
5 Dead things are formed from under the waters, and the inhabitants thereof.
5 The departed spirits tremble beneath the waters and [all] that inhabit them.
5 "The ghosts of the dead writhe under the waters along with those who live there with them.
5 The shades of the dead tremble underneath the waters and their inhabitants.
6 "Naked is Sheol before Him, And Abaddon has no covering.
6 Hell is naked before him, and destruction hath no covering.
6 Sheol is naked before God, and Abaddon has no covering.
6 Sheol is naked before God and Abaddon has no clothes.
6 Sheol (the place of the dead) is naked before God, and Abaddon (the place of destruction) has no covering [from His eyes].
7 "He stretches out the north over empty space And hangs the earth on nothing.
7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.
7 He stretches the northern [skies] over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing.
7 He spreads out the north over empty space, suspending the earth over nothing.
7 He it is Who spreads out the northern skies over emptiness and hangs the earth upon or over nothing.
8 "He wraps up the waters in His clouds, And the cloud does not burst under them.
8 He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them.
8 He enfolds the waters in His clouds, yet the clouds do not burst beneath their weight.
8 "He restricts the waters within clouds and the clouds don't burst open under them.
8 He holds the waters bound in His clouds [which otherwise would spill on earth all at once], and the cloud is not rent under them.
9 "He obscures the face of the full moon And spreads His cloud over it.
9 He holdeth back the face of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it.
9 He obscures the view of [His] throne, spreading His cloud over it.
9 He has enclosed the face of the full moon and spread his clouds over it.
9 He covers the face of His throne and spreads over it His cloud.
10 "He has inscribed a circle on the surface of the waters At the boundary of light and darkness.
10 He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end.
10 He laid out the horizon on the surface of the waters at the boundary between light and darkness.
10 He has delimited a boundary over the surface of the oceans as a limit between light and darkness.
10 He has placed an enclosing limit [the horizon] upon the waters at the boundary between light and darkness.
11 "The pillars of heaven tremble And are amazed at His rebuke.
11 The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof.
11 The pillars [that hold up] the sky tremble, astounded at His rebuke.
11 The pillars of the heavens tremble and are astounded at his rebuke.
11 The pillars of the heavens tremble and are astonished at His rebuke.
12 "He quieted the sea with His power, And by His understanding He shattered Rahab.
12 He divideth the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smiteth through the proud.
12 By His power He stirred the sea, and by His understanding He crushed Rahab.
12 By his power he disturbs the sea; and with his skill he shatters the sea monster.
12 He stills or stirs up the sea by His power, and by His understanding He smites proud Rahab.
13 "By His breath the heavens are cleared; His hand has pierced the fleeing serpent.
13 By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent.
13 By His breath the heavens gained their beauty; His hand pierced the fleeing serpent.
13 He clears the skies with his wind; his hands have pierced the fleeing serpent.
13 By His breath the heavens are garnished; His hand pierced the [swiftly] fleeing serpent.
14 "Behold, these are the fringes of His ways; And how faint a word we hear of Him! But His mighty thunder, who can understand?"
14 Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?
14 These are but the fringes of His ways; how faint is the word we hear of Him! Who can understand His mighty thunder?
14 Indeed, these are the fringes of his ways, and how faint is the whisper we've heard of it! But who can comprehend the thunder of his might?"
14 Yet these are but [a small part of His doings] the outskirts of His ways or the mere fringes of His force, the faintest whisper of His voice! Who dares contemplate or who can understand the thunders of His full, magnificent power?
