Matthew 2

Wise Men Visit Jesus

1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,

1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, wise men from the east arrived unexpectedly in Jerusalem,

1 After Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judea during the reign of King Herod, wise men arrived in Jerusalem from the east

1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men [astrologers] from the east came to Jerusalem, asking,

2 "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him."

2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

2 saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him."

2 and asked, "Where is the one who was born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."

2 Where is He Who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the east at its rising and have come to worship Him.

3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

3 When King Herod heard this, he was deeply disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.

3 When King Herod heard this, he was disturbed, as was all of Jerusalem.

3 When Herod the king heard this, he was disturbed and troubled, and the whole of Jerusalem with him.

4 Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born.

4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

4 So he assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people and asked them where the Messiah would be born.

4 He called together all the high priests and scribes of the people and asked them where the Messiah was to be born.

4 So he called together all the chief priests and learned men (scribes) of the people and anxiously asked them where the Christ was to be born.

5 They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet:

5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,

5 "In Bethlehem of Judea," they told him, "because this is what was written by the prophet:

5 They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, because that is what was written by the prophet:

5 They replied to him, In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

6 'AND YOU, BETHLEHEM, LAND OF JUDAH, ARE BY NO MEANS LEAST AMONG THE LEADERS OF JUDAH; FOR OUT OF YOU SHALL COME FORTH A RULER WHO WILL SHEPHERD MY PEOPLE ISRAEL.'"

6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

6 And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the leaders of Judah: because out of you will come a leader who will shepherd My people Israel. "

6 "O Bethlehem in the land of Judah, you are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, because from you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'"

6 And you Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, you are not in any way least or insignificant among the chief cities of Judah; for from you shall come a Ruler ( Leader) Who will govern and shepherd My people Israel.

7 Then Herod secretly called the magi and determined from them the exact time the star appeared.

7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

7 Then Herod secretly summoned the wise men and asked them the exact time the star appeared.

7 Then Herod secretly called together the wise men, found out from them the time the star had appeared,

7 Then Herod sent for the wise men [astrologers] secretly, and accurately to the last point ascertained from them the time of the appearing of the star [that is, how long the star had made itself visible since its rising in the east].

8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him."

8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the child. When you find Him, report back to me so that I too can go and worship Him."

8 and sent them to Bethlehem. He told them, "As you go, search carefully for the child. When you find him, tell me so that I, too, may go and worship him."

8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search for the Child carefully and diligently, and when you have found Him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship Him.

9 After hearing the king, they went their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was.

9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

9 After hearing the king, they went on their way. And there it was-the star they had seen in the east! It led them until it came and stopped above the place where the child was.

9 After listening to the king, they set out, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it came and stopped over the place where the child was.

9 When they had listened to the king, they went their way, and behold, the star which had been seen in the east in its rising went before them until it came and stood over the place where the young Child was.

10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.

10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed beyond measure.

10 When they saw the star, they were ecstatic with joy.

10 When they saw the star, they were thrilled with ecstatic joy.

11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

11 Entering the house, they saw the child with Mary His mother, and falling to their knees, they worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

11 After they went into the house and saw the child with his mother Mary, they fell down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasure sacks and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

11 And on going into the house, they saw the Child with Mary His mother, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then opening their treasure bags, they presented to Him gifts -- "gold and frankincense and myrrh.

12 And having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way.

12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

12 And being warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their own country by another route.

12 Having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they left for their own country by a different road.

12 And receiving an answer to their asking, they were divinely instructed and warned in a dream not to go back to Herod; so they departed to their own country by a different way.

Joseph, Mary, And Jesus Escape To Egypt

13 Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him."

13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

13 After they were gone, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Get up! Take the child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. For Herod is about to search for the child to destroy Him."

13 After they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt," he said. "Stay there until I tell you, because Herod intends to search for the child and kill him."

13 Now after they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, Get up! [ Tenderly] take unto you the young Child and His mother and flee to Egypt; and remain there till I tell you [otherwise], for Herod intends to search for the Child in order to destroy Him.

14 So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt.

14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:

14 So he got up, took the child and His mother during the night, and escaped to Egypt.

14 So Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and left at night for Egypt.

14 And having risen, he took the Child and His mother by night and withdrew to Egypt

15 He remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "OUT OF EGYPT I CALLED MY SON."

15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

15 He stayed there until Herod's death, so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled: Out of Egypt I called My Son.

15 He stayed there until Herod's death in order to fulfill what was declared by the Lord through the prophet when he said, "Out of Egypt I called my Son."

15 And remained there until Herod's death. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, Out of Egypt have I called My Son.

Herod Has Innocent Children Murdered

16 Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi.

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been outwitted by the wise men, flew into a rage. He gave orders to massacre all the male children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, in keeping with the time he had learned from the wise men.

16 Herod flew into a rage when he learned that he had been tricked by the wise men, so he ordered the execution of all the male children in Bethlehem and all its neighboring regions, who were two years old and younger, according to the time that he had determined from the wise men.

16 Then Herod, when he realized that he had been misled by the wise men, was furiously enraged, and he sent and put to death all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that territory who were two years old and under, reckoning according to the date which he had investigated diligently and had learned exactly from the wise men.

17 Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:

17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,

17 Then what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:

17 Then what was declared by the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled when he said,

17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:

18 "A VOICE WAS HEARD IN RAMAH, WEEPING AND GREAT MOURNING, RACHEL WEEPING FOR HER CHILDREN; AND SHE REFUSED TO BE COMFORTED, BECAUSE THEY WERE NO MORE."

18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

18 A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; and she refused to be consoled, because they were no more.

18 "A voice was heard in Ramah: wailing and great mourning. Rachel was crying for her children. She refused to be comforted, because they no longer existed."

18 A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they were no more.

Joseph, Mary, And Jesus Return To Nazareth

19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said,

19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

19 But after Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt.

19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt

20 "Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child's life are dead."

20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.

20 saying, "Get up! Take the child and His mother and go to the land of Israel, because those who sought the child's life are dead."

20 "Get up," he said. "Take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, because those who were trying to kill the child are dead."

20 And said, Rise, [ tenderly] take unto you the Child and His mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the Child's life are dead.

21 So Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.

21 And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.

21 So he got up, took the child and His mother, and entered the land of Israel.

21 So Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and went into the land of Israel.

21 Then he awoke and arose and [ tenderly] took the Child and His mother and came into the land of Israel.

22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being warned by God in a dream, he left for the regions of Galilee,

22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:

22 But when he heard that Archelaus 6 was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned in a dream, he withdrew to the region of Galilee.

22 But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, after having been warned in a dream. So he left for the region of Galilee

22 But because he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in the place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being divinely warned in a dream, he withdrew to the region of Galilee.

23 and came and lived in a city called Nazareth This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: "He shall be called a Nazarene."

23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

23 Then he went and settled in a town called Nazareth to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets, that He will be called a Nazarene.

23 and settled in a town called Nazareth in order to fulfill what was said by the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."

23 He went and dwelt in a town called Nazareth, so that what was spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled: He shall be called a Nazarene [Branch, Separated One].
