Psalm 14

A Portrait Of Sinners

1 The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God " They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; There is no one who does good.

1 {To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.} The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

1 The fool says in his heart, "God does not exist." They are corrupt; their actions are revolting. There is no one who does good.

1 Fools say to themselves, "There is no God." They are corrupt and commit evil deeds; not one of them practices what is good.

1 The [empty-headed] fool has said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable deeds; there is none that does good or right.

2 The LORD has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men To see if there are any who understand, Who seek after God.

2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.

2 The Lord looks down from heaven on the human race to see if there is one who is wise, one who seeks God.

2 The LORD looks down from the heavens upon humanity to see if anyone shows discernment as he searches for God.

2 The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men to see if there were any who understood, dealt wisely, and sought after God, inquiring for and of Him and requiring Him [of vital necessity].

3 They have all turned aside, together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one.

3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

3 All have turned away; all alike have become corrupt. There is no one who does good, not even one.

3 All have turned away, together they have become corrupt; no one practices what is good, not even one.

3 They are all gone aside, they have all together become filthy; there is none that does good or right, no, not one.

4 Do all the workers of wickedness not know, Who eat up my people as they eat bread, And do not call upon the Lord?

4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the LORD.

4 Will evildoers never understand? They consume my people as they consume bread; they do not call on the Lord.

4 Will those who do evil ever learn? They devour my people like they devour bread, and never call on the LORD.

4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread and who do not call on the Lord?

5 There they are in great dread, For God is with the righteous generation.

5 There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous.

5 Then they will be filled with terror, for God is with those who are righteous.

5 There they are seized with terror, because God is with those who are righteous.

5 There they shall be in great fear [literally -- "dreading a dread], for God is with the generation of the [uncompromisingly] righteous (those upright and in right standing with Him).

6 You would put to shame the counsel of the afflicted, But the LORD is his refuge.

6 Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the LORD is his refuge.

6 You [sinners] frustrate the plans of the afflicted, but the Lord is his refuge.

6 You would frustrate the plans of the oppressed, but the LORD is their refuge.

6 You [evildoers] would put to shame and confound the plans of the poor and patient, but the Lord is his safe refuge.

7 Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion! When the LORD restores His captive people, Jacob will rejoice, Israel will be glad.

7 Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! when the LORD bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

7 Oh, that Israel's deliverance would come from Zion! When the Lord restores His captive people, Jacob will rejoice; Israel will be glad.

7 May Israel's deliverance come from Zion! When the LORD restores the fortunes of his people, Jacob will rejoice, and Israel will be glad. A Davidic Psalm.

7 Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion! When the Lord shall restore the fortunes of His people, then Jacob shall rejoice and Israel shall be glad.
