Psalm 31

A Plea For Protection

1 In You, O LORD, I have taken refuge; Let me never be ashamed; In Your righteousness deliver me.

1 {To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.} In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.

1 In you, LORD, I have taken refuge. Let me never be ashamed. Because you are righteous, deliver me!

1 In You, O Lord, do I put my trust and seek refuge; let me never be put to shame or [have my hope in You] disappointed; deliver me in Your righteousness!

2 Incline Your ear to me, rescue me quickly; Be to me a rock of strength, A stronghold to save me.

2 Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.

2 Listen to me, and deliver me quickly. Become a rock of safety for me, a fortified citadel to deliver me;

2 Bow down Your ear to me, deliver me speedily! Be my Rock of refuge, a strong Fortress to save me!

3 For You are my rock and my fortress; For Your name's sake You will lead me and guide me.

3 For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me.

3 For you are my rock and my fortress; for the sake of your name guide me and lead me.

3 Yes, You are my Rock and my Fortress; therefore for Your name's sake lead me and guide me.

4 You will pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me, For You are my strength.

4 Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength.

4 Rescue me from the net that they concealed to trap me; for you are my strength.

4 Draw me out of the net that they have laid secretly for me, for You are my Strength and my Stronghold.

5 Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have ransomed me, O LORD, God of truth.

5 Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.

5 Into your hands I commit my spirit; for you have redeemed me, LORD God of truth.

5 Into Your hands I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O Lord, the God of truth and faithfulness.

6 I hate those who regard vain idols, But I trust in the LORD.

6 I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the LORD.

6 I despise those who trust vain idols; but I have trusted in the LORD.

6 [You and] I abhor those who pay regard to vain idols; but I trust in, rely on, and confidently lean on the Lord.

7 I will rejoice and be glad in Your lovingkindness, Because You have seen my affliction; You have known the troubles of my soul,

7 I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;

7 I will rejoice and be glad in your gracious love, for you see my affliction and take note that my soul is distressed.

7 I will be glad and rejoice in Your mercy and steadfast love, because You have seen my affliction, You have taken note of my life's distresses,

8 And You have not given me over into the hand of the enemy; You have set my feet in a large place.

8 And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.

8 You have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy, but you have set my feet in a sturdy place.

8 And You have not given me into the hand of the enemy; You have set my feet in a broad place.

9 Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; My eye is wasted away from grief, my soul and my body also.

9 Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly.

9 Be gracious to me, LORD, for I am in distress. My eyes have been consumed by my grief along with my soul and my body.

9 Have mercy and be gracious unto me, O Lord, for I am in trouble; with grief my eye is weakened, also my inner self and my body.

10 For my life is spent with sorrow And my years with sighing; My strength has failed because of my iniquity, And my body has wasted away.

10 For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed.

10 My life is consumed by sorrow, my years with groaning. My strength has faltered because of my iniquity; my bones have been consumed.

10 For my life is spent with sorrow and my years with sighing; my strength has failed because of my iniquity, and even my bones have wasted away.

11 Because of all my adversaries, I have become a reproach, Especially to my neighbors, And an object of dread to my acquaintances; Those who see me in the street flee from me.

11 I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me.

11 I have become an object of reproach to all my enemies, especially to my neighbors. I have become an object of fear to my friends, and whoever sees me outside runs away from me.

11 To all my enemies I have become a reproach, but especially to my neighbors, and a dread to my acquaintances, who flee from me on the street.

12 I am forgotten as a dead man, out of mind; I am like a broken vessel.

12 I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.

12 Like a dead man, I am forgotten in their thoughts like broken pottery.

12 I am forgotten like a dead man, and out of mind; like a broken vessel am I.

13 For I have heard the slander of many, Terror is on every side; While they took counsel together against me, They schemed to take away my life.

13 For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.

13 I have heard the slander of many; it is like terror all around me, as they conspire together and plot to take my life.

13 For I have heard the slander of many; terror is on every side! While they schemed together against me, they plotted to take my life.

14 But as for me, I trust in You, O LORD, I say, "You are my God."

14 But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my God.

14 But I trust in you, LORD. I say, "You are my God."

14 But I trusted in, relied on, and was confident in You, O Lord; I said, You are my God.

15 My times are in Your hand; Deliver me from the hand of my enemies and from those who persecute me.

15 My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.

15 My times are in your hands. Deliver me from the hands of my enemies and from those who pursue me.

15 My times are in Your hands; deliver me from the hands of my foes and those who pursue me and persecute me.

16 Make Your face to shine upon Your servant; Save me in Your lovingkindness.

16 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies' sake.

16 May your face shine on your servant; in your gracious love, deliver me.

16 Let Your face shine on Your servant; save me for Your mercy's sake and in Your loving-kindness.

17 Let me not be put to shame, O LORD, for I call upon You; Let the wicked be put to shame, let them be silent in Sheol.

17 Let me not be ashamed, O LORD; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.

17 Let me not be ashamed, LORD, for I have called upon you. Let the wicked be put to shame, let them be silent in the next life.

17 Let me not be put to shame, O Lord, or disappointed, for I am calling upon You; let the wicked be put to shame, let them be silent in Sheol (the place of the dead).

18 Let the lying lips be mute, Which speak arrogantly against the righteous With pride and contempt.

18 Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.

18 Let the lying lips be made still, especially those who speak arrogantly against the righteous with pride and contempt.

18 Let the lying lips be silenced, which speak insolently against the [consistently] righteous with pride and contempt.

19 How great is Your goodness, Which You have stored up for those who fear You, Which You have wrought for those who take refuge in You, Before the sons of men!

19 Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!

19 How great is your goodness that you have reserved for those who fear you, that you have set in place for those who take refuge in you, in the presence of the children of men.

19 Oh, how great is Your goodness, which You have laid up for those who fear, revere, and worship You, goodness which You have wrought for those who trust and take refuge in You before the sons of men!

20 You hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the conspiracies of man; You keep them secretly in a shelter from the strife of tongues.

20 Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

20 You will hide them in the secret place of your presence, away from the conspiracies of men. You will hide them in your tent, away from their contentious tongues.

20 In the secret place of Your presence You hide them from the plots of men; You keep them secretly in Your pavilion from the strife of tongues.

21 Blessed be the LORD, For He has made marvelous His lovingkindness to me in a besieged city.

21 Blessed be the LORD: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city.

21 Blessed be the LORD! In a marvelous way he demonstrated his gracious love to me, when I was in a city under siege.

21 Blessed be the Lord! For He has shown me His marvelous loving favor when I was beset as in a besieged city.

22 As for me, I said in my alarm, "I am cut off from before Your eyes"; Nevertheless You heard the voice of my supplications When I cried to You.

22 For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes: nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.

22 When I said in my panic, "I have been cut off in your sight," then you surely heard the voice of my prayer in my plea to you for help.

22 As for me, I said in my haste and alarm, I am cut off from before Your eyes. But You heard the voice of my supplications when I cried to You for aid.

23 O love the LORD, all you His godly ones! The LORD preserves the faithful And fully recompenses the proud doer.

23 O love the LORD, all ye his saints: for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.

23 Love the LORD, all his godly ones! The LORD preserves the faithful and repays those who act with proud motives.

23 O love the Lord, all you His saints! The Lord preserves the faithful, and plentifully pays back him who deals haughtily.

24 Be strong and let your heart take courage, All you who hope in the LORD.

24 Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.

24 Be strong, and let your heart be courageous, all you who put your hope in the LORD. A Davidic instruction.

24 Be strong and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for and hope for and expect the Lord!
