Psalm 44

Israel's Complaint

1 O God, we have heard with our ears, Our fathers have told us The work that You did in their days, In the days of old.

1 {To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil.} We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.

1 God, we heard it with our ears; our ancestors told us about what you did in their day a long time ago.

1 We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us [what] work You did in their days, in the days of old.

2 You with Your own hand drove out the nations; Then You planted them; You afflicted the peoples, Then You spread them abroad.

2 How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.

2 With your hand you expelled the nations and established our ancestors. You afflicted nations and cast them out.

2 You drove out the nations with Your hand and it was Your power that gave [Israel] a home by rooting out the [heathen] peoples, but [Israel] You spread out.

3 For by their own sword they did not possess the land, And their own arm did not save them, But Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your presence, For You favored them.

3 For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.

3 It was not with their sword that they inherited the land, nor did their own arm deliver them. But it was by your power, your strength, and by the light of your face; because you were pleased with them.

3 For they got not the land [of Canaan] in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them; but Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your countenance [did it], because You were favorable toward and did delight in them.

4 You are my King, O God; Command victories for Jacob.

4 Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.

4 You are my king, God, command victories for Jacob.

4 You are my King, O God; command victories and deliverance for Jacob (Israel).

5 Through You we will push back our adversaries; Through Your name we will trample down those who rise up against us.

5 Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.

5 Through you we will knock down our oppressors; through your name we will tread down those who rise up against us.

5 Through You shall we push down our enemies; through Your name shall we tread them under who rise up against us.

6 For I will not trust in my bow, Nor will my sword save me.

6 For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.

6 For I place no confidence in my bow, nor will my sword deliver me.

6 For I will not trust in and lean on my bow, neither shall my sword save me.

7 But You have saved us from our adversaries, And You have put to shame those who hate us.

7 But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.

7 For you delivered us from our oppressors and put to shame those who hate us.

7 But You have saved us from our foes and have put them to shame who hate us.

8 In God we have boasted all day long, And we will give thanks to Your name forever. Selah.

8 In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.

8 We will praise God all day long; and to your name we will give thanks forever. Interlude

8 In God we have made our boast all the day long, and we will give thanks to Your name forever. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!

9 Yet You have rejected us and brought us to dishonor, And do not go out with our armies.

9 But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.

9 However, you cast us off and made us ashamed! You did not even march with our armies!

9 But now You have cast us off and brought us to dishonor, and You go not out with our armies.

10 You cause us to turn back from the adversary; And those who hate us have taken spoil for themselves.

10 Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.

10 You made us retreat from our oppressors. Our enemies ransacked us.

10 You make us to turn back from the enemy, and they who hate us take spoil for themselves.

11 You give us as sheep to be eaten And have scattered us among the nations.

11 Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.

11 You handed us over to be slaughtered like sheep and you scattered us among the nations.

11 You have made us like sheep intended for mutton and have scattered us in exile among the nations.

12 You sell Your people cheaply, And have not profited by their sale.

12 Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.

12 You sold out your people for nothing, and made no profit at that price.

12 You sell Your people for nothing, and have not increased Your wealth by their price.

13 You make us a reproach to our neighbors, A scoffing and a derision to those around us.

13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.

13 You made us a laughing stock to our neighbors, a source of mockery and derision to those around us.

13 You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, a scoffing and a derision to those who are round about us.

14 You make us a byword among the nations, A laughingstock among the peoples.

14 Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.

14 You made us an object lesson among the nations; people shake their heads at us.

14 You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the heads among the people.

15 All day long my dishonor is before me And my humiliation has overwhelmed me,

15 My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,

15 My dishonor tortures me continuously; the shame on my face overwhelms me

15 My dishonor is before me all day long, and shame has covered my face

16 Because of the voice of him who reproaches and reviles, Because of the presence of the enemy and the avenger.

16 For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger.

16 because of the voice of the one who mocks and reviles, because of the enemy and the avenger.

16 At the words of the taunter and reviler, by reason of the enemy and the revengeful.

17 All this has come upon us, but we have not forgotten You, And we have not dealt falsely with Your covenant.

17 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.

17 All this came upon us, yet we did not forsake you, and we have not dealt falsely with your covenant;

17 All this is come upon us, yet have we not forgotten You, neither have we been false to Your covenant [which You made with our fathers].

18 Our heart has not turned back, And our steps have not deviated from Your way,

18 Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;

18 Our hearts have not turned away; our steps have not swerved from your path.

18 Our hearts are not turned back, neither have our steps declined from Your path,

19 Yet You have crushed us in a place of jackals And covered us with the shadow of death.

19 Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.

19 Nevertheless, you crushed us in the lair of jackals, and covered us in deep darkness.

19 Though You have distressingly broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with deep darkness, even with the shadow of death.

20 If we had forgotten the name of our God Or extended our hands to a strange god,

20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;

20 If we had forgotten the name of our God or lifted our hands to a foreign god,

20 If we had forgotten the name of our God or stretched out our hands to a strange god,

21 Would not God find this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.

21 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

21 wouldn't God find out since he knows the secrets of the heart?

21 Would not God discover this? For He knows the secrets of the heart.

22 But for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.

22 Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

22 For your sake we are being killed all day long. We are thought of as sheep to be slaughtered.

22 No, but for Your sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

23 Arouse Yourself, why do You sleep, O Lord? Awake, do not reject us forever.

23 Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.

23 Wake up! Why are you asleep, Lord? Get up! Don't cast us off forever!

23 Awake! Why do You sleep, O Lord? Arouse Yourself, cast us not off forever!

24 Why do You hide Your face And forget our affliction and our oppression?

24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?

24 Why are you hiding your face? Why are you ignoring our affliction and oppression?

24 Why do You hide Your face and forget our affliction and our oppression?

25 For our soul has sunk down into the dust; Our body cleaves to the earth.

25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.

25 For we have collapsed in the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.

25 For our lives are bowed down to the dust; our bodies cleave to the ground.

26 Rise up, be our help, And redeem us for the sake of Your lovingkindness.

26 Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.

26 Arise! Deliver us! Redeem us according to your gracious love! To the Director: An instruction by the Sons of Korah. A love song to the tune of "Lilies".

26 Rise up! Come to our help, and deliver us for Your mercy's sake and because of Your steadfast love!
