Psalm 51

Create In Me A Clean Heart, O God

1 Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.

1 {To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.} Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

1 Be gracious to me, God, according to Your faithful love; according to Your abundant compassion, blot out my rebellion.

1 Have mercy, God, according to your gracious love, according to your unlimited compassion, erase my transgressions.

1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your steadfast love; according to the multitude of Your tender mercy and loving-kindness blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin.

2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

2 Wash away my guilt, and cleanse me from my sin.

2 Wash me from my iniquity, cleanse me from my sin.

2 Wash me thoroughly [and repeatedly] from my iniquity and guilt and cleanse me and make me wholly pure from my sin!

3 For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me.

3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.

3 For I am conscious of my rebellion, and my sin is always before me.

3 For I acknowledge my transgression; my sin remains continuously before me.

3 For I am conscious of my transgressions and I acknowledge them; my sin is ever before me.

4 Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge.

4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

4 Against You-You alone-I have sinned and done this evil in Your sight. So You are right when You pass sentence; You are blameless when You judge.

4 Against you, you only, have I sinned, and done what was evil in your sight. As a result, you are just in your pronouncement and clear in your judgment.

4 Against You, You only, have I sinned and done that which is evil in Your sight, so that You are justified in Your sentence and faultless in Your judgment.

5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.

5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

5 Indeed, I was guilty [when I] was born; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.

5 Indeed, in iniquity I was brought forth; in sin my mother conceived me.

5 Behold, I was brought forth in [a state of] iniquity; my mother was sinful who conceived me [and I too am sinful].

6 Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.

6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

6 Surely You desire integrity in the inner self, and You teach me wisdom deep within.

6 Indeed, you are pleased with truth in the inner person, and you will teach me wisdom in my innermost parts.

6 Behold, You desire truth in the inner being; make me therefore to know wisdom in my inmost heart.

7 Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

7 Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

7 Purge me with hyssop, and I will be clean. Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

7 Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean [ceremonially]; wash me, and I shall [in reality] be whiter than snow.

8 Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the bones which You have broken rejoice.

8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice.

8 Let me know joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.

8 Make me to hear joy and gladness and be satisfied; let the bones which You have broken rejoice.

9 Hide Your face from my sins And blot out all my iniquities.

9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

9 Turn Your face away from my sins and blot out all my guilt.

9 Hide your countenance from my sins and erase the record of my iniquities.

9 Hide Your face from my sins and blot out all my guilt and iniquities.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

10 God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

10 God, create a pure heart in me, and renew a right attitude within me.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

11 Do not banish me from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence; do not take your Holy Spirit from me.

11 Cast me not away from Your presence and take not Your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit.

12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

12 Restore the joy of Your salvation to me, and give me a willing spirit.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and let a willing attitude control me.

12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit.

13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You.

13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

13 Then I will teach the rebellious Your ways, and sinners will return to You.

13 Then I will teach transgressors about your ways, and sinners will turn to you.

13 Then will I teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners shall be converted and return to You.

14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.

14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.

14 Save me from the guilt of bloodshed, God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing of Your righteousness.

14 Deliver me from the guilt of shedding blood, God, God of my salvation. Then my tongue will sing about your righteousness.

14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness and death, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness (Your rightness and Your justice).

15 O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise.

15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.

15 Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

15 Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.

15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise.

16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering.

16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.

16 You do not want a sacrifice, or I would give it; You are not pleased with a burnt offering.

16 Indeed, you do not delight in sacrifices, or I would give them, nor do you desire burnt offerings.

16 For You delight not in sacrifice, or else would I give it; You find no pleasure in burnt offering.

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

17 The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit. God, You will not despise a broken and humbled heart.

17 True sacrifice to God is a broken spirit. A broken and chastened heart, God, you will not despise.

17 My sacrifice [the sacrifice acceptable] to God is a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart [broken down with sorrow for sin and humbly and thoroughly penitent], such, O God, You will not despise.

18 By Your favor do good to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem.

18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.

18 In Your good pleasure, cause Zion to prosper; build the walls of Jerusalem.

18 Show favor to Zion in your good pleasure; and rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

18 Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

19 Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, In burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar.

19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

19 Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on Your altar.

19 Then you will be pleased with right sacrifices, with burnt offerings, and with whole burnt offerings. Then they will offer bulls on your altar. To the Director: A Davidic instruction about Doeg, the Edomite, when he went to Saul and told him, "David went to the house of Abimelech."

19 Then will You delight in the sacrifices of righteousness, justice, and right, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering; then bullocks will be offered upon Your altar.
