Psalm 52

God Judges The Proud

1 Why do you boast in evil, O mighty man? The lovingkindness of God endures all day long.

1 {To the chief Musician, Maschil, A Psalm of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech.} Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually.

1 Why brag about evil, you hero! God's faithful love is constant.

1 Why do you make evil the foundation of your boasting, mighty one? God's gracious love never ceases.

1 Why boast you of mischief done against the loving-kindness of God [and the godly], O mighty [sinful] man, day after day?

2 Your tongue devises destruction, Like a sharp razor, O worker of deceit.

2 Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp rasor, working deceitfully.

2 Like a sharpened razor, your tongue devises destruction, working treachery.

2 Your tongue, like a sharp razor, devises wicked things and crafts treachery.

2 Your tongue devises wickedness; it is like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

3 You love evil more than good, Falsehood more than speaking what is right. Selah.

3 Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.

3 You love evil instead of good, lying instead of speaking truthfully. Selah

3 You love evil rather than good, falsehood rather than speaking uprightly. Interlude

3 You love evil more than good, and lying rather than to speak righteousness, justice, and right. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!

4 You love all words that devour, O deceitful tongue.

4 Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue.

4 You love any words that destroy, you treacherous tongue!

4 You love all words that destroy, you deceitful tongue!

4 You love all destroying and devouring words, O deceitful tongue.

5 But God will break you down forever; He will snatch you up and tear you away from your tent, And uproot you from the land of the living. Selah.

5 God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.

5 This is why God will bring you down forever. He will take you, ripping you out of your tent; He will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah

5 But God will tear you down forever; he will take you away, even snatching you out of your tent! He will uproot you from the land of the living. Interlude

5 God will likewise break you down and destroy you forever; He will lay hold of you and pluck you out of your tent and uproot you from the land of the living. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!

6 The righteous will see and fear, And will laugh at him, saying,

6 The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him:

6 The righteous will look on with awe and will ridicule him:

6 The righteous will fear when they see this, but then they will laugh at him, saying,

6 The [uncompromisingly] righteous also shall see [it] and be in reverent fear and awe, but about you they will [scoffingly] laugh, saying,

7 "Behold, the man who would not make God his refuge, But trusted in the abundance of his riches And was strong in his evil desire."

7 Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

7 "Here is the man who would not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his riches, taking refuge in his destructive behavior."

7 "Look, here is a young man who refused to make God his strength; instead, he trusted in his great wealth and made his wickedness his strength.

7 See, this is the man who made not God his strength (his stronghold and high tower) but trusted in and confidently relied on the abundance of his riches, seeking refuge and security for himself through his wickedness.

8 But as for me, I am like a green olive tree in the house of God; I trust in the lovingkindness of God forever and ever.

8 But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.

8 But I am like a flourishing olive tree in the house of God; I trust in God's faithful love forever and ever.

8 But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God; I trust in the gracious love of God forever and ever.

8 But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God; I trust in and confidently rely on the loving-kindness and the mercy of God forever and ever.

9 I will give You thanks forever, because You have done it, And I will wait on Your name, for it is good, in the presence of Your godly ones.

9 I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: and I will wait on thy name; for it is good before thy saints.

9 I will praise You forever for what You have done. In the presence of Your faithful people, I will put my hope in Your name, for it is good.

9 Therefore I will praise you forever because of what you did; I will proclaim that your name is good in the midst of your faithful ones. To the Director: Upon . A Davidic instruction.

9 I will thank You and confide in You forever, because You have done it [delivered me and kept me safe]. I will wait on, hope in and expect in Your name, for it is good, in the presence of Your saints (Your kind and pious ones).
