A Call For God's Protection

1 For the choir director; according to (a)Jonath elem rehokim. A (b)Mikhtam of David, (c)when the Philistines seized him in Gath.Be gracious to me, O God, for man has (d)(A)trampled upon me;(e)Fighting all day long he (B)oppresses me.

1 {To the chief Musician upon Jonathelemrechokim, Michtam of David, when the Philistines took him in Gath.} Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me.

1 Have mercy on me, God, because men have harassed me. Those who oppress me have fought against me all day long.

1 Be gracious to me, O God, for man has trampled on me;All day long the adversary oppresses and torments me.

2 My foes have (f)(C)trampled upon me all day long,For (g)they are many who (D)fight proudly against me.

2 Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.

2 My adversaries trample me all day,for many arrogantly fight against me.(b)(B)

2 Those who watch me all day have harassed me, for there are many who fight against me out of conceit.

2 My enemies have trampled upon me all day long,For they are many who fight proudly against me.

3 (h)When I am (E)afraid,(i)I will (F)put my trust in You.

3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

3 On days when I am afraid, I put my trust in you.

3 When I am afraid,I will put my trust and faith in You.

4 (G)In God, whose word I praise,In God I have put my trust;I shall not be afraid.(H)What can mere (j)man do to me?

4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

4 In God, whose word I praise,in God I trust; I will not fear.What can man do to me?(D)

4 In God, whose word I praise, in God I put my trust. I will not fear what mortal man can do to me.

4 In God, whose word I praise;In God I have put my trust;I shall not fear.What can mere man do to me?

5 All day long they (k)(I)distort my words;All their (l)(J)thoughts are against me for evil.

5 Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil.

5 They twist my words all day long;all their thoughts against me are evil.(E)

5 All day long people distort what I say; all their schemes against me are for evil purposes.

5 All day long they twist my words and say hurtful things;All their thoughts are against me for evil.

6 They (m)(K)attack, they lurk,They (L)watch my (n)steps,As they have (M)waited to take my (o)life.

6 They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul.

6 They stir up strife,(c) they lurk;they watch my stepswhile they wait to take my life.(F)

6 They gather together and hide in ambush. They watch my every step as they lie in wait for my life.

6 They attack, they hide and lurk,They watch my steps,As they have [expectantly] waited to take my life.

7 Because of wickedness, (p)(N)cast them forth,In anger (O)put down the peoples, O God!

7 Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast down the people, O God.

7 Will they escape in spite of such sin?God, bring down the nations in wrath.(G)

7 Cast them away because of their wickedness. In wrath, God, cast down these people!

7 Cast them out because of their wickedness.In anger bring down the peoples, O God!

8 You (P)have taken account of my wanderings;Put my (Q)tears in Your bottle.Are they not in (R)Your book?

8 Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?

8 You Yourself have recorded my wanderings.(d)Put my tears in Your bottle.Are they not in Your records?(H)

8 You have kept count of my wanderings. Put my tears in your bottle have not you recorded them in your book?

8 You have taken account of my wanderings;Put my tears in Your bottle.Are they not recorded in Your book?

9 Then my enemies will (S)turn back (T)in the day when I call;This I know, (q)that (U)God is for me.

9 When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.

9 Then my enemies will retreat on the day when I call.(I)This I know: God is for me.(J)

9 My enemies will retreat when I call on you. This has been my experience, because God is with me.

9 Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call;This I know, that God is for me.(A)

12 Your (V)vows are binding upon me, O God;I will render thank offerings to You.

12 Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.

12 I am obligated by vows(e) to You, God;I will make my thank offerings to You.(L)

12 God, I have taken vows before you; therefore I will offer thanksgiving sacrifices to you.

12 Your vows are binding upon me, O God;I will give thank offerings to You.

13 For You have (W)delivered my soul from death,(s)Indeed (X)my feet from stumbling,So that I may (Y)walk before GodIn the (Z)light of the (t)living.

13 For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

13 For You delivered me from death,even my feet from stumbling,to walk before God in the light of life.(M)

13 For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, so that I may walk before God in the light of the living! To the Director: A special Davidic psalm to the tune of "Do Not Destroy," when he fled from Saul into a cave.
