Psalm 87

Zion, The City Of God

1 His foundation is in the holy mountains.

1 {A Psalm or Song for the sons of Korah.} His foundation is in the holy mountains.

1 God's foundation is in the holy mountains.

1 On the holy hills stands the city [of Jerusalem and the temple] God founded.

2 The LORD loves the gates of Zion More than all the other dwelling places of Jacob.

2 The LORD loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.

2 The LORD loves the gates of Zion more than the dwellings of Jacob.

2 The Lord loves the gates of Zion [through which the crowds of pilgrims enter from all nations] more than all the dwellings of Jacob (Israel).

3 Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God. Selah.

3 Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. Selah.

3 Glorious things are spoken about you, city of God. Interlude

3 Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God. Selah [pause, and calmly realize what that means]!

4 "I shall mention Rahab and Babylon among those who know Me; Behold, Philistia and Tyre with Ethiopia: 'This one was born there.'"

4 I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to them that know me: behold Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; this man was born there.

4 I will mention Rahab and Babylon among those who acknowledge me including Philistia, Tyre, and Ethiopia "This one was born there," they say.

4 I will make mention of Rahab [the poetic name for Egypt] and Babylon as among those who know [the city of God] -- "behold, Philistia and Tyre, with Ethiopia (Cush) -- "[saying], This man was born there.

5 But of Zion it shall be said, "This one and that one were born in her"; And the Most High Himself will establish her.

5 And of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her: and the highest himself shall establish her.

5 Indeed, about Zion it will be said: "More than one person was born in it," and "The Most High himself did it."

5 Yes, of Zion it shall be said, This man and that man were born in her, for the Most High Himself will establish her.

6 The LORD will count when He registers the peoples, "This one was born there." Selah.

6 The LORD shall count, when he writeth up the people, that this man was born there. Selah.

6 The LORD will record, as he registers the nations, "This one was born there." Interlude

6 The Lord shall count, when He registers the peoples, that this man was born there. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!

7 Then those who sing as well as those who play the flutes shall say, "All my springs of joy are in you."

7 As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there: all my springs are in thee.

7 Then singers, as they play their instruments, will declare, "All my roots are in you." A song. A psalm by the descendants of Korah. According to . An instruction by Heman the Ezrahite.

7 The singers as well as the players on instruments shall say, All my springs (my sources of life and joy) are in you [city of our God].
