'High Priest' in the Bible
So he assembled all the High Priests and Scribes of the people, and anxiously asked them where the Christ was to be born.
From that time on Jesus began to show His disciples [clearly] that He must go to Jerusalem, and endure many things at the hands of the elders and the chief priests and scribes (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court), and be killed, and be raised [from death to life] on the third day.
"We are going up to Jerusalem, and there the Son of Man will be betrayed to the High Priests and Scribes. They will condemn Him to death,
But when the High Priests and the Scribes saw the wonderful things that He had done and the children who were crying aloud in the Temple, "God save the Son of David," they were filled with indignation.
He entered the Temple; and while He was teaching, the High Priests and the Elders of the people came to Him and asked Him, "By what authority are you doing these things? and who gave you this authority?"
After listening to His parables the High Priests and the Pharisees perceived that He was speaking about them;
Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,
At that time one of the Twelve, the one called Judas Iscariot, went to the High Priests
He had scarcely finished speaking when Judas came--one of the Twelve--accompanied by a great crowd of men armed with swords and bludgeons, sent by the High Priests and Elders of the People.
And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.
And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.
But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.
Meanwhile the High Priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking false testimony against Jesus in order to put Him to death;
And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.
When morning came all the High Priests and the Elders of the people consulted together against Jesus to put Him to death;
Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He was condemned, smitten with remorse he brought back the thirty shekels to the High Priests and Elders
When the High Priests had gathered up the money they said, "It is illegal to put it into the Treasury, because it is the price of blood."
When however the High Priests and the Elders kept bringing their charges against Him, He said not a word in reply.
The High Priests, however, and the Elders urged the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to demand the death of Jesus.
In like manner the High Priests also, together with the Scribes and the Elders, taunted Him.
On the next day, the day after the Preparation, the High Priests and the Pharisees came in a body to Pilate.
While they went on this errand, some of the guards came into the city and reported to the High Priests every detail of what had happened.
How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
And now for the first time He told them, "The Son of Man must endure much suffering, and be rejected by the Elders and the High Priests and the Scribes, and be put to death, and after two days rise to life."
"See," He said, "we are going up to Jerusalem, where the Son of Man will be betrayed to the High Priests and the Scribes. They will condemn Him to death, and will hand Him over to the Gentiles;
This the High Priests and Scribes heard, and they began to devise means to destroy Him. For they were afraid of Him, because of the deep impression produced on all the people by His teaching.
They came again to Jerusalem; and as He was walking in the Temple, the High Priests, Scribes and Elders came to Him
It was now two days before the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread, and the High Priests and Scribes were bent on finding how to seize Him by stratagem and put Him to death.
But Judas Iscariot, already mentioned as one of the Twelve, went to the High Priests to betray Jesus to them.
Immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came and with him a crowd of men armed with swords and cudgels, sent by the High Priests and Scribes and Elders.
And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.
And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.
Meanwhile the High Priests and the entire Sanhedrin were endeavouring to get evidence against Jesus in order to put Him to death, but could find none;
And neither so was their evidence sufficient. Then the high priest standing up in the midst,
And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?
And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:
At earliest dawn, after the High Priests had held a consultation with the Elders and Scribes, they and the entire Sanhedrin bound Jesus and took Him away and handed Him over to Pilate.
Then, as the High Priests went on heaping accusations on Him,
For he could see that it was out of sheer spite that the High Priests had handed Him over.
But the High Priests urged on the crowd to obtain Barabbas's release in preference;
In the same way the High Priests also, as well as the Scribes, kept on scoffing at Him, saying to one another, "He has saved others: himself he cannot save!
Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
and He said, "The Son of Man must suffer much cruelty, be rejected by the Elders and High Priests and Scribes, and be put to death, and on the third day be raised to life again."
And day after day He taught in the Temple, while the High Priests and the Scribes were devising some means of destroying Him, as were also the leading men of the people.
On one of those days while He was teaching the people in the Temple and proclaiming the Good News, the High Priests came upon Him, and the Scribes,
At this the Scribes and the High Priests wanted to lay hands on Him, then and there; only they were afraid of the people. For they saw that in this parable He had referred to them.
and the High Priests and the Scribes were contriving how to destroy Him. But they feared the people.
He went and conferred with the High Priests and Commanders as to how he should deliver Him up to them.
And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
Then Jesus said to the High Priests and Commanders of the Temple and Elders, who had come to arrest Him, "Have you come out as if to fight with a robber, with swords and cudgels?
Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off.
As soon as it was day, the whole body of the Elders, both High Priests and Scribes, assembled. Then He was brought into their Sanhedrin, and they asked Him,
Pilate said to the High Priests and to the crowd, "I can find no crime in this man."
Meanwhile the High Priests and the Scribes were standing there and vehemently accusing Him.
Then calling together the High Priests and the Rulers and the people, Pilate said,
And they cried with loud voice, and required that he might be crucified. And the voice of them and of the high priests prevailed.
and how our High Priests and Rulers delivered Him up to be sentenced to death, and crucified Him.
The Pharisees heard the people thus expressing their various doubts about Him, and the High Priests and the Pharisees sent some officers to apprehend Him.
Meanwhile the officers returned to the High Priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why have you not brought him?"
Therefore the High Priests and the Pharisees held a meeting of the Sanhedrin. "What steps are we taking?" they asked one another; "for this man is performing a great number of miracles.
And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
Now the High Priests and the Pharisees had issued orders that if any one knew where He was, he should give information, so that they might arrest Him.
The High Priests, however, consulted together to put Lazarus also to death,
So Judas, having obtained the Roman cohort and some officers from the high priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.
And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.
But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.
And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?
Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
"Am I a Jew?" exclaimed Pilate; "it is your own nation and the High Priests who have handed you over to me. What have you done?"
As soon then as the High Priests and the officers saw Him, they shouted "To the cross! To the cross!" "Take him yourselves and crucify him," said Pilate; "for I, at any rate, find no crime in him."
This caused a storm of outcries, "Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!" "Am I to crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king, except Caesar," answered the High Priests.
The high priests responded, "We have no king but Caesar!" Then Pilate handed him over to be crucified, and they took Jesus away.
This led the Jewish High Priests to remonstrate with Pilate. "You should not write 'The King of the Jews,'" they said, "but that he claimed to be King of the Jews."
And while Peter and John were talking to the people, the priests and the captain [who was in charge of the temple area and] of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them,
And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.
After their release the two Apostles went to their friends, and told them all that the High Priests and Elders had said.
Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation,
And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.
Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto this would grow.
And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them,
Then said the high priest, Are these things so?
And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,
went to the High Priest and begged from him letters addressed to the synagogues in Damascus, in order that if he found any believers there, either men or women, he might bring them in chains to Jerusalem.
and here [in Damascus] he has authority from the high priests to put in chains all who call on Your name [confessing You as Savior].”
He lost no time in preaching throughout the synagogues that Jesus was the Son of God ??21 to the amazement of all his hearers, who said, "Is this not the man who in Jerusalem harried those who invoke this Name, the man who came here for the express purpose of carrying them all in chains to the high priests?"
and his hearers were all amazed, and began to ask one another, "Is not this the man who in Jerusalem tried to exterminate those who called upon that Name, and came here on purpose to carry them off in chains to the High Priests?"
And there were certain men, seven sons of Sceva, Jewish high priest, who were doing this.
And I persecuted this way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women: As likewise the high priest is my witness, and all the estate of the elders:
As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.
The next day, wishing to know exactly what charge was being brought against him by the Jews, the Tribune ordered his chains to be removed; and, having sent word to the High Priests and all the Sanhedrin to assemble, he brought Paul down and made him stand before them.
