Matthew 1:18-25 - The Birth Of Jesus Christ

¹⁸ Now the birth of Christ was on this wise: His mother Mary, being espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. ¹⁹ Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and yet not willing to make her a publick example, purposed to put her away privily.

²⁰ But while he was thinking on these things, behold an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take to thee Mary thy wife; for that which is begotten in her, is of the Holy Ghost. ²¹ And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus; for he shall save his people from their sins.

²² (Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet,

²³ saying, Behold the virgin shall be with child, and bring forth a Son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which is, being interpreted, God with us.)

²⁴ Then Joseph, being raised from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: ²⁵ But he knew her not, till she had brought forth her Son, the first-born. And he called his name Jesus.

¹ And in those days there went out a decree from Augustus Cesar, that all the world should be inrolled. ² (Now this first inrolment was made, when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) ³ And all went to be inrolled, every one to his own city.

⁴ And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, ⁵ (because he was of the family and houshold of David) To be inrolled with Mary, his espoused wife, being great with child. ⁶ And while they were there, the days were fulfilled, that she should be delivered. ⁷ And she brought forth her son, the first-born, and swathed him, and laid him in the manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
