And while they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,

Acts 4:2 (show verse)

being indignant that they taught the people, and proclaimed in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

And they laid hands upon them, and put them in prison until the next day; for it was now evening.

Many however of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men became five thousand.

And it came to pass on the next day, that their rulers and elders and scribes,

Acts 4:6 (show verse)

and Annas the highpriest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the highpriest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.

And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, did ye do this?

Acts 4:8 (show verse)

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people, and elders of Israel!

If we are this day examined in respect to a good deed done to a cripple, by what means he hath been restored,

Acts 4:10 (show verse)

be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead,by him doth this man stand here before you sound.

Acts 4:11 (show verse)

This is the stone which was set at nought by you the builders, which is become a cornerstone.

Acts 4:12 (show verse)

And there is salvation in no other; for there is not another name under heaven, that hath been given among men, by which we must be saved.

And when they beheld the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and common men, they wondered; and they recognized them as having been with Jesus.

And seeing the man that had been cured standing with them, they could say nothing in reply.

But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,

saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a remarkable sign hath been wrought by them is manifest to all that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.

But that it spread no further among the people, let us strictly forbid them with threats to speak any longer in this name to any one.

And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all, nor teach, in the name of Jesus.

Acts 4:19 (show verse)

But Peter and John answered and said to them, Whether it is right in the sight of God to hearken to you rather than to God, judge ye.

So, having further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, on account of the people; because all were glorifying God for that which had been done.

to do whatever thy hand and thy will before determined to be done.

And now, Lord, look upon their threatenings, and grant to thy servants that with all boldness they may speak thy word,

while thou stretchest forth thy hand to heal, and signs and wonders are wrought through the name of thy holy servant Jesus.

And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
