For an angel went down at certain times into the bath, and the water was troubled: and whosoever went in first, after the troubling of the water, was made whole, whatsoever disease he had. The infirm man answered him, Sir, I have no man to put me into the bath, when the water is troubled; and while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. Then said the Jews to him that was healed, It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for thee to take up the bed. He answered, He that made me whole, he said to me, Take up thy bed and walk. Then asked they him, Who is the man that said to thee, Take up thy bed and walk? And he that was healed knew not who he was; for Jesus had retired, a multitude being in the place. Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said to him, Lo, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come to thee. The man departed and told the Jews, that it was Jesus who had made him whole. And therefore the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill him, because he had done these things on the sabbath.
