But I have this [charge] against you, that you have left your first love [you have lost the depth of love that you first had for Me].
And may the Lord cause you to increase and excel and overflow in love for one another, and for all people, just as we also do for you;
But they quickly forgot His works;
They did not [patiently] wait for His counsel and purpose [to be revealed regarding them],
never lagging behind in diligence; aglow in the Spirit, enthusiastically serving the Lord;
What then has become of that sense of blessing and the joy that you once had [from your salvation and your relationship with Christ]? For I testify of you that, if possible, you would have torn out your own eyes and given them to me [to replace mine].
‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold (invigorating, refreshing) nor hot (healing, therapeutic); I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm (spiritually useless), and neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you out of My mouth [rejecting you with disgust]. Because you say, “I am rich, and have prospered and grown wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked [without hope and in great need],
And this I pray, that your love may abound more and more [displaying itself in greater depth] in real knowledge and in practical insight,
And they forgot His [incredible] works
And His miraculous wonders that He had shown them.
