Wherefore there is a necessity for being in subjection, not only for fear of wrath, but also for conscience sake. REMIND them to be subject to princes and those invested with authority, to obey magistrates, to be ready for every good work,

Be subject therefore to every human constitution for the Lord's sake; whether to a king as the supreme magistrate; or to governors, as sent by him for the punishment of wicked doers, but the praise of those who do well.

Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due, custom to whom custom, fear to whom fear, honour to whom honour.

I EXHORT therefore, first of all, that there be offered supplications, prayers, intercessions, thanksgivings for the whole race of mankind: for kings, and all that are in a state of eminence, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and seriousness.
