But I tell you, everyone who divorces his wife, except in a case of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Some Pharisees approached Him to test Him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife on any grounds?”
Then if you are not satisfied with her, you are to let her go where she wants, but you must not sell her for money or treat her as merchandise, because you have humiliated her.
“If a man marries a woman, but she becomes displeasing to him because he finds something improper about her, he may write her a divorce certificate, hand it to her, and send her away from his house.
I command the married—not I, but the Lord—a wife is not to leave her husband.
“Haven’t you read,” He replied, “that He who created them in the beginning made them male and female,” and He also said:
“For this reason a man will leave
his father and mother
and be joined to his wife,
and the two will become one flesh? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, man must not separate.”
But I (not the Lord) say to the rest: If any brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not leave her. Also, if any woman has an unbelieving husband and he is willing to live with her, she must not leave her husband. For the unbelieving husband is set apart for God by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is set apart for God by the husband. Otherwise your children would be corrupt, but now they are set apart for God.
But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this reason a man will leave
his father and mother
[and be joined to his wife],
and the two will become one flesh.
So they are no longer two, but one flesh. read more.
Therefore what God has joined together, man must not separate.”
But if she does leave, she must remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband—and a husband is not to leave his wife.
This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh.
“Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and everyone who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.
Didn’t the one God make us with a remnant of His life-breath? And what does the One seek? A godly offspring. So watch yourselves carefully, and do not act treacherously against the wife of your youth.
And He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. Also, if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

For example, a married woman is legally bound to her husband while he lives. But if her husband dies, she is released from the law regarding the husband. So then, if she gives herself to another man while her husband is living, she will be called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law. Then, if she gives herself to another man, she is not an adulteress.
He told them, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because of the hardness of your hearts. But it was not like that from the beginning.
A wife is bound as long as her husband is living. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to anyone she wants—only in the Lord.
But Jesus told them, “He wrote this command for you because of the hardness of your hearts.
And I tell you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”
But if the unbeliever leaves, let him leave. A brother or a sister is not bound in such cases. God has called you to live in peace.
I observed that it was because unfaithful Israel had committed adultery that I had sent her away and had given her a certificate of divorce. Nevertheless, her treacherous sister Judah was not afraid but also went and prostituted herself.
