For the tribe of Gad: the leader of the descendants of Gad [will be] Eliasaph son of Reuel.

"Then the Tent of Meeting is to travel with the camp of the descendants of Levi in the middle of the camps. They are to travel just as they have camped, each as designated under his standard."

"The standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their divisions [will be] to the west. The leader of the descendants of Ephraim [will be] Elishama son of Ammihud.

The tribe of Manasseh [will be] next to him. The leader of the descendants of the tribe of Manasseh [will be] Camaliel son of Pedahzur.

For the tribe of Benjamin: the leader of the descendants of Benjamin [will be] Abidan son of Gideoni.

"The standard of the camp of Dan according to their divisions [will be] to the west. The leader of the descendants of Dan [will be] Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.

Those encamped next to him [will be] the tribe of Asher. The leader of the descendants of Asher [will be] Pagiel son of Ocran.

For the tribe of Naphtali: the leader of the descendants of Naphtali [will be] Ahira son of Enan.

but the descendants of Levi were not numbered along with the other Israelis, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

These [are] the names of the descendants of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

These [are] the names of the descendants of Aaron, the priests, the anointed ones whom {he consecrated as priests}.

Assign the descendants of Levi to Aaron and his sons from among the Israelis.

"I'm taking the descendants of Levi for myself from among the Israelis in place of every first-born who opens the womb. The descendants of Levi belong to me

"Number the descendants of Levi according to their ancestral houses and tribes, numbering every male from a month old and above."

These are Levi's descendants by name: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

These are names of Gershon's descendants according to their families: Libni and Shimei.

These are the names of Kohath's descendants according to their families: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.

Merari's descendants according to their families were Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the descendants of Levi according to their ancestral house.

The families of Libni and Shimei were descendants of Gershon. As families of the descendants of Gershon,

The families of the descendants of Gershon encamped behind the tent toward the west.

The duties of the descendants of Gershon at the Tent of Meeting pertained to the tent, the tent covering, the curtain to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting,

The families of Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel were descendants of Kohath. As families of the descendants of Kohath,

The descendants of Kohath encamped beside the tent toward the south.

The chief of all the leaders of the descendants of Levi was Aaron the priest's son Eleazar. He was assigned to oversee those who were in charge of the services of the sanctuary.

The families of Mahli and Mushi were descendants of Merari. As families of Merari,

The assigned duties of Merari's descendants involved the tabernacle's supports, crossbars, posts, bases, all its equipment, and all the work related to these,

These are the duties of the descendants of Kohath at the Tent of Meeting."

"You are not to eliminate the tribe of the families of the descendants of Kohath from the descendants of Levi.

"Take a census of the descendants of Gershon according to their ancestral house and tribes.

"These are the responsibilities that the descendants of Gershon are to have:

The descendants of Gershon are to carry out the instructions of Aaron and his sons. You are to assign them their responsibilities to carry out.

This [is] the work of the clan of the descendants of the Gershonites in the tent of assembly, and their responsibility [lies] {under the direction} of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.

"For the descendants of Merari, number them according to their tribes and ancestral houses

This is the work of the tribes of the descendants of Merari with reference to their service at the Tent of Meeting under the supervision of Aaron the priest's son Ithamar."

Moses, Aaron, and the congregational leaders numbered the descendants of Kohath according to their tribes and ancestral houses

from the tribe of the descendants of Kohath, everyone who would be serving at the Tent of Meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to what the LORD had said, under the supervision of Moses.

The tribes and the ancestral houses of the descendants of Gershon were numbered

from the tribes of the descendants of Gershon, everyone who would be serving at the Tent of Meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to what the LORD had said.

Those counted of the clans of the descendants of Merari according to their clans, according to {their families},

"Take these gifts from them and use them in service at the Tent of Meeting. Present them to the descendants of Levi, distributing them to each person according to his work."

So Moses took the carts and the oxen and presented them to the descendants of Levi.

Two carts and four oxen were given to the descendants of Gershon for their work.

Four carts and eight oxen were given to the descendants of Merari for their work.

But he gave none of them to the descendants of Kohath, because their responsibility was to carry the holy things on their shoulders.

"Take the descendants of Levi from the Israelis and purify them.

Assemble the descendants of Levi in front of the appointed place of meeting, and assemble the whole congregation of Israel, too.

Bring the descendants of Levi into the LORD's presence and have the Israelis lay their hands on the descendants of Levi.

"Then Aaron is to present the descendants of Levi as a wave offering before the LORD from the Israelis, because they are to work in the service of the LORD.

The descendants of Levi are then to lay their hands on the head of the bulls, offering one for a sin offering and the other one for a burnt offering to the LORD to atone for the descendants of Levi.

You are to make the descendants of Levi stand in the presence of Aaron and his sons. Then you are to wave them as wave offerings to the LORD.

This is how you are to separate the descendants of Levi from among the Israelis. The descendants of Levi belong to me.

"After this, the descendants of Levi are to come to serve at the appointed place of meeting, after you have purified them and presented them as wave offerings,

taking the descendants of Levi instead of every firstborn of the Israelis.

I've set the descendants of Levi apart from the Israelis so that Aaron and his sons would work in service at the appointed place of meeting, making atonement on behalf of the Israelis so that there won't be a plague among the Israelis whenever they approach the sanctuary."

So Moses and Aaron and the Israelis did this on behalf of the descendants of Levi. The Israelis did everything that the LORD commanded concerning the descendants of Levi.
