'Man' in the Bible
Zacharias said to the angel, “How will I know this for certain? For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years.”
to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
And he would answer and say to them, “The man who has two tunics is to share with him who has none; and he who has food is to do likewise.”
And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,
But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!”
While He was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man covered with leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and implored Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”
And some men were carrying on a bed a man who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down in front of Him.
The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?”
But, so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,”—He said to the paralytic—“I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home.”
And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
On another Sabbath He entered the synagogue and was teaching; and there was a man there whose right hand was withered.
But He knew what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and come forward!” And he got up and came forward.
Blessed are you when men hate you, and ostracize you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man.
And He also spoke a parable to them: “A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit?
The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.
he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.
But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”
For I also am a man placed under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.”
Now as He approached the gate of the city, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a sizeable crowd from the city was with her.
And He came up and touched the coffin; and the bearers came to a halt. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise!”
The dead man sat up and began to speak. And Jesus gave him back to his mother.
But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who are splendidly clothed and live in luxury are found in royal palaces!
The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a sinner.”
Those who were reclining at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this man who even forgives sins?”
And when He came out onto the land, He was met by a man from the city who was possessed with demons; and who had not put on any clothing for a long time, and was not living in a house, but in the tombs.
For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would break his bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.
And the demons came out of the man and entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.
The people went out to see what had happened; and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting down at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they became frightened.
Those who had seen it reported to them how the man who was demon-possessed had been made well.
But the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging Him that he might accompany Him; but He sent him away, saying,
And there came a man named Jairus, and he was an official of the synagogue; and he fell at Jesus’ feet, and began to implore Him to come to his house;
Herod said, “I myself had John beheaded; but who is this man about whom I hear such things?” And he kept trying to see Him.
saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.”
For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself?
For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
And a man from the crowd shouted, saying, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my only boy,
“Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.”
for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.”] And they went on to another village.
And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.
Jesus replied and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead.
Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?”
And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute; when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds were amazed.
When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are undisturbed.
“When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’
Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.”
For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
“And I say to you, everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of Man will confess him also before the angels of God;
And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him.
But He said to him, “Man, who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over you?”
And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man was very productive.
So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
You too, be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect.”
And He began telling this parable: “A man had a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any.
It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.”
And there in front of Him was a man suffering from dropsy.
and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then in disgrace you proceed to occupy the last place.
But He said to him, “A man was giving a big dinner, and he invited many;
saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’
Both the Pharisees and the scribes began to grumble, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.”
“What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?
Now He was also saying to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and this manager was reported to him as squandering his possessions.
“Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day.
And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores,
Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.
And He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.
For just like the lightning, when it flashes out of one part of the sky, shines to the other part of the sky, so will the Son of Man be in His day.
And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man:
It will be just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed.
saying, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man.
For a while he was unwilling; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor respect man,
I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?”
I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished.
As Jesus was approaching Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the road begging.
And there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich.
When they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”
For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’
for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.’
He *said to him, ‘By your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?
And He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and rented it out to vine-growers, and went on a journey for a long time.
Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
But keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
And He said to them, “When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters.
For indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”
But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, “This man was with Him too.”
A little later, another saw him and said, “You are one of them too!” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
After about an hour had passed, another man began to insist, saying, “Certainly this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean too.”
But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.”
Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.”
When Pilate heard it, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.
