'Off' in the Bible
“I baptize you with water for repentance, but the One who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove His sandals. He Himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
And news of him went out through all Syria; and they took to him all who were ill with different diseases and pains, those having evil spirits and those who were off their heads, and those who had no power of moving. And he made them well.
And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding.
The herdsmen ran off, went into the town, and told everything that had happened to the demon-possessed men.
And he got up, and went off home.
But they went out and spread the news about Him throughout that whole district.
These twelve Jesus sent out when he had charged them, saying, Go not off into the way of the nations, and into a city of Samaritans enter ye not;
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.
At that particular time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples were hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat them.
He will not snap off a broken reed or snuff out a smoldering wick until he has brought justice through to victory.
How can someone go into a strong man's house and carry off his possessions without first tying up the strong man? Then he can ransack his house.
Then off it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and settle down there. As a result, that man’s last condition is worse than the first. That’s how it will also be with this evil generation.”
When John's disciples came, they carried off the body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
But in the fourth watch of the night he went off to them, walking on the sea.
This people doth draw nigh to Me with their mouth, and with the lips it doth honour Me, but their heart is far off from Me;
Lord have mercy on my son: for he is off his head, and is in great pain; and frequently he goes falling into the fire, and frequently into the water.
Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.
To those men he said, ‘You also go to my vineyard, and I’ll give you whatever is right.’ So off they went.
So off they went. He went out again about noon and about three o'clock and did the same thing.
“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.
and will cut him off, and his portion with the hypocrites will appoint; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of the teeth.
The one who had received five talents went off right away and put his money to work and gained five more.
But the man who had received one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master’s money.
So I was afraid and went off and hid your talent in the ground. Look, you have what is yours.’
And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.
But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.
And throwing the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary, he left; and went away and hanged himself.
and having taken off his garment, put on him a scarlet cloak;
And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.
So one of the men ran off at once, took a sponge, and soaked it in some sour wine. Then he put it on a stick and offered Jesus a drink.
And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
So they went and made the tomb secure, and along with [stationing] a guard of soldiers [to be on watch] they set a seal on the stone.
Immediately Jesus called to them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired workers, and went away to follow Him [becoming His disciples, believing and trusting in Him and following His example].
One Sabbath He was walking along [with His disciples] through the grainfields, and as they went along, His disciples began picking the heads of grain.
And when his friends had news of it, they went out to get him, saying, He is off his head.
No one can go into a strong man's house and carry off his possessions without first tying up the strong man. Then he can ransack his house.
because he often had been bound with shackles and chains, but had snapped off the chains and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
The men who tended them ran off and reported it in the town and the countryside, and people went to see what had happened.
And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him.
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
So the king immediately sent for an executioner and commanded him to bring back John’s head. And he went and had John beheaded in the prison,
When John's disciples heard about this, they came and carried off his body and laid it in a tomb.
And after He said goodbye to them, He went to the mountain to pray.
He replied, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites (play-actors, pretenders), as it is written [in Scripture],‘These people honor Me with their lips,But their heart is far from Me.
then you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother [since helping them would violate his vow of Corban];
"And whoever shall occasion the fall of one of these little ones who believe, he would be better off if, with a millstone round his neck, he were lying at the bottom of the sea.
And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
[where their worm does not die, and the fire is not put out.]
And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
Many angrily told him to leave off shouting; but he only cried out all the louder, "Son of David, have pity on me."
He threw off his coat, jumped up, and came to Jesus.
And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way.
And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet.
Now the Passover and Unleavened Bread were two days away; and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to seize Him by stealth and kill Him;
Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests in order to betray Him to them.
But one of those standing there drew his sword and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear.
but he ran off naked, leaving his linen cloth behind.
And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.
Now at the Festival it was customary for Pilate to release to the Jews any one prisoner whom they might beg off from punishment;
And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.
Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave Him a drink, saying, “Let us see whether Elijah is coming to take Him down.”
There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;
They hurried off and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby who was lying in the feeding trough.
When the devil had finished every temptation, he [temporarily] left Him until a more opportune time.
They got up, forced Jesus out of the city, and led him to the edge of the hill on which their city was built, intending to throw him off.
And when he left off speaking, he said unto Simon, 'Put back to the deep, and let down your nets for a draught;'
It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God.
No kiss did you give me; but she from the moment I came in has not left off tenderly kissing my feet.
Other seed fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it out.
And it came to pass on one of the days, that he entered into a ship, himself and his disciples; and he said to them, Let us pass over to the other side of the lake; and they set off from shore.
But as they were sailing, He fell asleep. And a fierce gale of wind swept down [as if through a wind tunnel] on the lake, and they began to be swamped, and were in great danger.
When the men who tended them saw what had happened, they ran off and reported it in the town and in the countryside.
“Go back to your home, and tell all that God has done for you.” And off he went, proclaiming throughout the town all that Jesus had done for him.
The people were all weeping aloud and beating their breasts for her; but He said, "Leave off wailing; for she is not dead, but asleep."
And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.
Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
Jesus replied and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead.
But when a stronger man than he attacks and defeats him, the stronger man strips off that man's armor in which he trusted and then divides his plunder.
the lord of that servant will come in a day in which he doth not look for him, and in an hour that he doth not know, and will cut him off, and his portion with the unfaithful he will appoint.
and he said unto the vine-dresser, Lo, three years I come seeking fruit in this fig-tree, and do not find, cut it off, why also the ground doth it render useless?
and if indeed it may bear fruit -- ;and if not so, thereafter thou shalt cut it off.'
But they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, ‘I have purchased a piece of land and I have to go out and see it; please consider me excused.’
Or what king, going to war with another king, will not first take thought if he will be strong enough, with ten thousand men, to keep off him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
And after not many days the younger son gathering all together went away into a country a long way off, and there dissipated his property, living in debauchery.
And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
covered with sores and longing to make a full meal off the scraps flung on the floor from the rich man's table. Nay, the dogs, too, used to come and lick his sores.
And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
So he shouted, "Father Abraham, have mercy on me! Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water to cool off my tongue, because I am suffering in this fire.'
And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:
And they will say to you, 'See there!' 'See here!' Do not start off and go in pursuit.
And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
So those who were sent went off and found it as Jesus had told them.
They will fall by the edge of the sword and be carried off as captives among all the nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled on by the unbelievers until the times of the unbelievers are fulfilled."
So he went off and discussed with the high priests and the Temple police how he could betray Jesus to them.
Then one of them struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear.
Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off.
When he learned with certainty that Jesus came from Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him off to Herod, who was in Jerusalem at that time.
