'One' in the Bible

How lonely she lies, the city that thronged with people! Like a widow she has become, this great one among nations! The princess among provinces has become a vassal.

ב BetShe weeps aloud during the night,with tears on her cheeks.There is no one to offer her comfort,not one from all her lovers.All her friends have betrayed her;they have become her enemies.

ד DaletThe roads to Zion mourn,for no one comes to the appointed festivals.All her gates are deserted;her priests groan,her young women grieve,and she herself is bitter.

ז ZayinDuring the days of her affliction and homelessnessJerusalem remembers all her precious belongingsthat were hers in days of old.When her people fell into the adversary’s hand,she had no one to help.The adversaries looked at her,laughing over her downfall.

ט TetHer uncleanness stains her skirts.She never considered her end.Her downfall was astonishing;there was no one to comfort her.Lord, look on my affliction,for the enemy triumphs!

ע AyinI weep because of these things;my eyes flow with tears.For there is no one nearby to comfort me,no one to keep me alive.My children are desolatebecause the enemy has prevailed.

פ PeZion stretches out her hands;there is no one to comfort her.The Lord has issued a decree against Jacobthat his neighbors should be his adversaries.Jerusalem has becomesomething impure among them.

שׁ ShinPeople have heard me groaning,but there is no one to comfort me.All my enemies have heard of my misfortune;they are glad that You have caused it.Bring on the day You have announced,so that they may become like me.

Come in doth all their evil before Thee, And one is doing to them as Thou hast done to me, For all my transgressions, For many are my sighs, and my heart is sick!

The Lord has become like one fighting against her, sending destruction on Israel; he has sent destruction on all her great houses, making waste his strong places: increasing the grief and the sorrow of the daughter of Judah.

To their mothers they say, 'Where are corn and wine?' In their becoming feeble as a pierced one In the broad places of the city, In their soul pouring itself out into the bosom of their mothers.

What can be said about you? To what should you be compared, fair Jerusalem? To what may I liken you, so I may comfort you, fair one of Zion? Indeed, your wound is as deep as the sea who can heal you?

ת TavYou summoned my attackers on every side,as if for an appointed festival day;on the day of the Lord’s angerno one escaped or survived.My enemy has destroyedthose I nurtured and reared.

By him my ways have been turned on one side and I have been pulled in bits; he has made me waste.

(Tet) The Lord is good to those who trust in him, to the one who seeks him.

Good! when one doth stay and stand still For the salvation of Jehovah.

Let him offer his cheekto the one who would strike him;let him be filled with shame.

{to deprive one of justice} before the face of the Most High;

Why should any living mortal, or any man,Complain [of punishment] in view of his sins?

ד DaletThe nursing infant’s tongueclings to the roof of his mouth from thirst.Little children beg for bread,but no one gives them any.

(Vav) The punishment of my people exceeded that of of Sodom, which was overthrown in a moment with no one to help her.

Their face is blacker than night; in the streets no one has knowledge of them: their skin is hanging on their bones, they are dry, they have become like wood.

נ NunBlind, they stumbled in the streets,defiled by this blood,so that no one daredto touch their garments.

[And as for us,] yet our eyes failed,Looking in vain for help.Watching [from the towers] we watchedFor a nation that could not save.

The breath of our nostrils, the anointed one of Yahweh, was captured in their pits; of whom we said, "In his shadow we will live among the nations."

We are closely pursued;we are tired, and no one offers us rest.

Slaves rule over us;no one rescues us from their hands.
