'Power' in the Bible

Reuben, you are my firstborn,my strength and the firstfruits of my virility,excelling in prominence, excelling in power.

A new king, who had not known Joseph, came to power in Egypt.

But Moses interceded with the Lord his God: “Lord, why does Your anger burn against Your people You brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and a strong hand?

The Lord answered Moses, “Is the Lord’s power limited? You will see whether or not what I have promised will happen to you.”

“So now, may my Lord’s power be magnified just as You have spoken:

Lord God, You have begun to show Your greatness and power to Your servant, for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can perform deeds and mighty acts like Yours?

Because He loved your fathers, He chose their descendants after them and brought you out of Egypt by His presence and great power,

But because the Lord loved you and kept the oath He swore to your fathers, He brought you out with a strong hand and redeemed you from the place of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

But they are Your people, Your inheritance, whom You brought out by Your great power and outstretched arm.

Then the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, with terrifying power, and with signs and wonders.

and for all the mighty acts of power and terrifying deeds that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.

Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest said to the descendants of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh, “Today we know that the Lord is among us, because you have not committed this treachery against Him. As a result, you have delivered the Israelites from the Lord’s power.”

The Lord raised up judges, who saved them from the power of their marauders,

Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for the Israelites, the Lord was with him and saved the people from the power of their enemies while the judge was still alive. The Lord was moved to pity whenever they groaned because of those who were oppressing and afflicting them.

Then the Israelites said to Gideon, “Rule over us, you as well as your sons and your grandsons, for you delivered us from the power of Midian.”

The Israelites did not remember the Lord their God who had delivered them from the power of the enemies around them.

If only these people were in my power, I would remove Abimelech.” So he said to Abimelech, “Gather your army and come out.”

Sidonians, Amalekites, and Maonites oppressed you, and you cried out to Me, did I not deliver you from their power?

Then Jephthah said to them, “My people and I had a serious conflict with the Ammonites. So I called for you, but you didn’t deliver me from their power.

So the Lord sent Jerubbaal, Barak, Jephthah, and Samuel. He rescued you from the power of the enemies around you, and you lived securely.

So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and He surrendered them to the power of Hazael king of Aram and his son Ben-hadad during their reigns.

During Saul’s reign they waged war against the Hagrites, who were defeated by their power. And they lived in their tents throughout the region east of Gilead.

Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in the heavens and on earth belongs to You. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom, and You are exalted as head over all.

Jeroboam no longer retained his power during Abijah’s reign; ultimately, the Lord struck him and he died.

He said:Yahweh, the God of our ancestors, are You not the God who is in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in Your hand, and no one can stand against You.

Then Jehu looked for Ahaziah, and Jehu’s soldiers captured him (he was hiding in Samaria). So they brought Ahaziah to Jehu, and they killed him. The soldiers buried him, for they said, “He is the grandson of Jehoshaphat who sought the Lord with all his heart.” So no one from the house of Ahaziah had the strength to rule the kingdom.

But if you go with them, do it! Be strong for battle! But God will make you stumble before the enemy, for God has the power to help or to make one stumble.”

Isn’t Hezekiah misleading you to give you over to death by famine and thirst when he says, “Yahweh our God will deliver us from the power of the king of Assyria”?

“‘Don’t you know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Have any of the national gods of the lands been able to deliver their land from my power?

Who among all the gods of these nations that my predecessors completely destroyed was able to deliver his people from my power, that your God should be able to do the same for you?

So now, don’t let Hezekiah deceive you, and don’t let him mislead you like this. Don’t believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my power or the power of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you from my power!’”

He also wrote letters to mock Yahweh, the God of Israel, saying against Him:Just like the national gods of the lands that did not deliver their people from my power, so Hezekiah’s God will not deliver His people from my power.

So the Lord saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the power of King Sennacherib of Assyria and from the power of all others. He gave them rest on every side.

We set out from the Ahava River on the twelfth day of the first month to go to Jerusalem. We were strengthened by our God, and He protected us from the power of the enemy and from ambush along the way.

They are Your servants and Your people. You redeemed them by Your great power and strong hand.

So You handed them over to their enemies,who oppressed them.In their time of distress, they cried out to You,and You heard from heaven.In Your abundant compassionYou gave them deliverers, who rescued themfrom the power of their enemies.

For Mordecai exercised great power in the palace, and his fame spread throughout the provinces as he became more and more powerful.

“Very well,” the Lord told Satan, “everything he owns is in your power. However, you must not lay a hand on Job himself.” So Satan left the Lord’s presence.

In famine He will redeem you from death,and in battle, from the power of the sword.

that He would decide to crush me,to unleash His power and cut me off!

or “Deliver me from the enemy’s power”or “Redeem me from the grasp of the ruthless”?

If I am proud, You hunt me like a lionand again display Your miraculous power against me.

The tents of robbers are safe,and those who provoke God are secure;God’s power provides this.

True wisdom and power belong to Him.The deceived and the deceiver are His.

Yet God drags away the mighty by His power;when He rises up, they have no assurance of life.

By His power He stirred the sea,and by His understanding He crushed Rahab.

I will teach you about God’s power.I will not conceal what the Almighty has planned.

Look, God shows Himself exalted by His power.Who is a teacher like Him?

The Almighty—we cannot reach Him—He is exalted in power!He will not oppress justice and abundant righteousness,

Look at the strength of his loinsand the power in the muscles of his belly.

I cannot be silent about his limbs,his power, and his graceful proportions.

They say, “Through our tongues we have power;our lips are our own—who can be our master?”

Deliver my life from the sword,my only life from the power of these dogs.

Do not kill them; otherwise, my people will forget.By Your power, make them homeless wanderersand bring them down,Lord, our shield.

They will be given over to the power of the sword;they will become the jackals’ prey.
