For he says to Moses, "I will be merciful to the person I want to be merciful to, and I will be kind to the person I want to be kind to."
For the Scripture says about Pharaoh, "I have raised you up for this very purpose, to demonstrate my power through you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth."
As He also says in Hosea:I will call Not My People, My People, and she who is Unloved, Beloved.
And Isaiah says about Israel, Even if the number of the children of Israel is as the sand of the sea, only a small part will get salvation:
Even as Isaiah says in an earlier place, "Were it not that the Lord, the God of Hosts, had left us some few descendants, we should have become like Sodom, and have come to resemble Gomorrah."
For Moses says that the man who does the righteousness which is of the law will get life by it.
But the righteousness that comes from faith says, "Do not say in your heart, "Who will go up to heaven?' (that is, to bring the Messiah down),
But what says it? The word is near thee, in thy mouth and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach:
For with the heart man has faith to get righteousness, and with the mouth he says that Jesus is Lord to get salvation.
Now the Scripture says, Everyone who believes on Him will not be put to shame,
But all did not obey the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our message?
But I say, did they not hear? Indeed they have;“Their voice [that of creation bearing God’s message] has gone out to all the earth,And their words to the [farthest] ends of the world.”
But I say, Has not Israel known? First, Moses says, I will provoke you to jealousy through them that are not a nation: through a nation without understanding I will anger you.
And Isaiah says boldly:I was foundby those who were not looking for Me;I revealed Myselfto those who were not asking for Me.
But to Israel he says: All day long I have spread out My hands to a disobedient and defiant people.
God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew. Or don’t you know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah—how he pleads with God against Israel?
But what says the divine answer to him? I have left to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed knee to Baal.
And so Scripture says, "God has given them a spirit of drowsiness--eyes to see nothing with and ears to hear nothing with--even until now."
And David says:Let their feasting become a snare and a trap,a pitfall and a retribution to them.
Friends, do not avenge yourselves; instead, leave room for His wrath. For it is written: Vengeance belongs to Me; I will repay, says the Lord.
For it is written:As I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow to Me,and every tongue will give praise to God.
Again it says: Rejoice, you Gentiles, with His people!
And again, Isaiah says:The root of Jesse will appear, the One who rises to rule the Gentiles;the Gentiles will hope in Him.
But, as Scripture says, "Those shall see, to whom no report about Him has hitherto come, and those who until now have not heard shall understand."
What I am saying is this: Each of you says, “I’m with Paul,” or “I’m with Apollos,” or “I’m with Cephas,” or “I’m with Christ.”
As it says in the holy Writings, I will put an end to the wisdom of the wise, and will put on one side the designs of those who have knowledge.
in order that it may be as Scripture says, "He who boasts--let his boast be in the Lord."
but just as it is written [in Scripture],“Things which the eye has not seen and the ear has not heard,And which have not entered the heart of man,All that God has prepared for those who love Him [who hold Him in affectionate reverence, who obey Him, and who gratefully recognize the benefits that He has bestowed].”
For whenever someone says, “I’m with Paul,” and another, “I’m with Apollos,” are you not unspiritual people?
Don’t you know that anyone joined to a prostitute is one body with her? For Scripture says, The two will become one flesh.
I am not saying this on human authority, am I? The Law says the same thing, doesn't it?
For it says in the law of Moses, It is not right to keep the ox from taking the grain when he is crushing it. Is it for the oxen that God is giving orders?
But if someone says to you, “This is food offered to an idol,” do not eat it, out of consideration for the one who told you, and for conscience’ sake.
Therefore I am informing you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
If the foot says, "Since I'm not a hand, I'm not part of the body," that does not make it any less a part of the body, does it?
And if the ear says, "Since I'm not an eye, I'm not part of the body," that does not make it any less a part of the body, does it?
Now I wish that all of you spoke in unknown tongues, but even more [I wish] that you would prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater [and more useful] than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he translates or explains [what he says], so that the church may be edified [instructed, improved, strengthened].
Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may [be gifted to] translate or explain [what he says].
It is written in the law:I will speak to these peopleby people of other languagesand by the lips of foreigners, and even then, they will not listen to Me,says the Lord.
the women should be silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak, but should be submissive, as the law also says.
For I gave to you first of all what was handed down to me, how Christ underwent death for our sins, as it says in the Writings;
And he was put in the place of the dead; and on the third day he came back from the dead, as it says in the Writings;
Now if the good news says that Christ came back from the dead, how do some of you say that there is no coming back from the dead?
For God has put everything under His feet. But when it says “everything” is put under Him, it is obvious that He who puts everything under Him is the exception.
And when this perishable puts on the imperishable, and this mortal puts on immortality, then the Scripture will be fulfilled that says, “Death is swallowed up in victory (vanquished forever).
But [as surely as] God is faithful and means what He says, our message to you is not “Yes” and “No” [at the same time].
For He says:I heard you in an acceptable time, and I helped you in the day of salvation.Look, now is the acceptable time; now is the day of salvation.
Therefore, come out from among themand be separate, says the Lord;do not touch any unclean thing, and I will welcome you.
I will be a Father to you,and you will be sons and daughters to Me,says the Lord Almighty.
As it says in the Writings, He who had taken up much had nothing over and he who had little had enough.
But in the Writings it says, He who puts in only a small number of seeds, will get in the same; and he who puts them in from a full hand, will have produce in full measure from them.
because his letters, he says, are weighty and strong, but his presence in the body weak, and his speech naught.
Now it is clear that no one is justified [that is, declared free of the guilt of sin and its penalty, and placed in right standing] before God by the Law, for “The righteous (the just, the upright) shall live by faith.”
But the Law does not rest on or require faith [it has nothing to do with faith], but [instead, the Law] says, “He who practices them [the things prescribed by the Law] shall live by them [instead of faith].”
Now to Abraham were the undertakings given, and to his seed. He says not, And to seeds, as of a great number; but as of one, he says, And to your seed, which is Christ.
Tell me, those of you who want to live under the Law: Are you really listening to what the Law says?
But what says the scripture? Cast out the maid servant and her son; for the son of the maid servant shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.
For the entire Law has been obeyed when you have kept the single precept, which says, "You are to love your fellow man equally with yourself."
For it says:When He ascended on high,He took prisoners into captivity; He gave gifts to people.
for the light is making everything visible. That is why it says, "Wake up, sleeper! Arise from the dead, and the Messiah will shine on you.''
Now the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will depart from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons,
For the Scripture says:Do not muzzle an oxwhile it is treading out the grain, and,the worker is worthy of his wages.
For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my son! Today I have fathered you"? And in another place he says, "I will be his father and he will be my son."
When He again brings His firstborn into the world, He says, And all God’s angels must worship Him.
And about the angels He says:He makes His angels winds, and His servants a fiery flame,
But about the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the scepter of your kingdom is a righteous scepter.
It is also of His Son that God says, "Thou, O Lord, in the beginning didst lay the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Thy hands.
when he says, "I will announce your name to my brothers. I will praise you within the congregation."
Again he says, "I will be confident in him," and again, "Here I am, with the children God has given me."
Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:Today, if you hear His voice,
As it says, "Oh, that today you would listen as he speaks! Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion."
Again, in that passage He says, They will never enter My rest.
After a long time, again naming a certain day, he says in David, Today (as he had said before), Today if you will let his voice come to your ears, be not hard of heart,
As he also says in another place, "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek."
(for they indeed have been made priests without an oath), but he with an oath by him that says of him, "The Lord swore and will not change his mind, 'You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.'"
who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, just as Moses was warned by God when he was about to erect the tabernacle; for, “See,” He says, “that you make all things according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain.”
But finding fault with His people, He says:Look, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenantwith the house of Israeland with the house of Judah—
not like the covenantthat I made with their ancestorson the day I took them by their handsto lead them out of the land of Egypt.I disregarded them, says the Lord, because they did not continue in My covenant.
But this is the covenantthat I will make with the house of Israelafter those days, says the Lord:I will put My laws into their mindsand write them on their hearts.I will be their God,and they will be My people.
In that he says New, he has made the first old; but that which grows old and aged is near disappearing.
Wherefore coming into the world he says, Sacrifice and offering thou willedst not; but thou hast prepared me a body.
After He says above, You did not want or delight in sacrifices and offerings, whole burnt offerings and sin offerings (which are offered according to the law),
He then says, See, I have come to do Your will. He takes away the first to establish the second.
This is the covenant I will make with themafter those days, says the Lord:I will put My laws on their heartsand write them on their minds,
then he says, "Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no longer."
For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine [retribution and the deliverance of justice rest with Me], I will repay [the wrongdoer].” And again, “The Lord will judge His people.”
And you have not kept in mind the word which says to you as to sons, My son, do not make little of the Lord's punishment, and do not give up hope when you are judged by him;
to Jesus (mediator of a new covenant), and to the sprinkled blood, which says better things than the blood of Abel.
If, however, you are keeping the Law as supreme, in obedience to the Commandment which says "You are to love your fellow man just as you love yourself," you are acting rightly.
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can his faith save him?
and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,” but you don’t give them what the body needs, what good is it?
So the Scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness, and he was called God’s friend.
for we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a mature man who is also able to control his whole body.
Or do you think it’s without reason the Scripture says that the Spirit who lives in us yearns jealously?
But He gives greater grace. Therefore He says:God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
Do not say evil against one another, my brothers. He who says evil against his brother or makes himself his brother's judge, says evil against the law and is judging the law: and in judging the law you become, not a doer of the law but a judge.
This is why it says in Scripture: "Look! I am laying a chosen, precious cornerstone in Zion. The one who believes in him will never be ashamed."
That is what he says in all his letters, when speaking in them of these things. In those letters there are some statements hard to understand, which ill-taught and unprincipled people pervert, just as they do the rest of the Scriptures, to their own ruin.
The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” yet doesn"t keep His commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
The one who says he remains in Him should walk just as He walked.
