Slaughter of the Idolaters

וַיִּקְרָ֣א

way·yiq·rā

And He called out

בְאָזְנַ֗י

ḇə·’ā·zə·nay,

､ ק֤וֹל

qō·wl

with a voice ､

גָּדוֹל֙

gā·ḏō·wl

､ לֵאמֹ֔ר

lê·mōr,

､ קָרְב֖וּ

qā·rə·ḇū

let draw near ､

פְּקֻדּ֣וֹת

pə·qud·dō·wṯ

those who have charge over

הָעִ֑יר

hā·‘îr;

the city

וְאִ֛ישׁ

wə·’îš

and each

כְּלִ֥י

kə·lî

[with] a weapon

מַשְׁחֵת֖וֹ

maš·ḥê·ṯōw

. בְּיָדֽוֹ׃

bə·yā·ḏōw.

､ וְהִנֵּ֣ה

wə·hin·nêh

And suddenly ､

שִׁשָּׁ֣ה

šiš·šāh

אֲנָשִׁ֡ים

’ă·nā·šîm

בָּאִ֣ים ׀

bā·’îm

מִדֶּרֶךְ־

mid·de·reḵ-

from the direction

､ שַׁ֨עַר

ša·‘ar

of gate ､

הָעֶלְי֜וֹן

hā·‘el·yō·wn

אֲשֶׁ֣ר ׀

’ă·šer

מָפְנֶ֣ה

mā·p̄ə·neh

､ צָפ֗וֹנָה

ṣā·p̄ō·w·nāh,

וְאִ֨ישׁ

wə·’îš

and each

כְּלִ֤י

kə·lî

מַפָּצוֹ֙

map·pā·ṣōw

with his battle-ax

– בְּיָד֔וֹ

bə·yā·ḏōw,

in his hand –

וְאִישׁ־

wə·’îš-

and man

אֶחָ֤ד

’e·ḥāḏ

בְּתוֹכָם֙

bə·ṯō·w·ḵām

לָבֻ֣שׁ

lā·ḇuš

[was] clothed with

､ בַּדִּ֔ים

bad·dîm,

וְקֶ֥סֶת

wə·qe·seṯ

הַסֹּפֵ֖ר

has·sō·p̄êr

of had a writer

. בְּמָתְנָ֑יו

bə·mā·ṯə·nāw;

､ וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙

way·yā·ḇō·’ū

And they went in ､

וַיַּ֣עַמְד֔וּ

way·ya·‘am·ḏū,

אֵ֖צֶל

’ê·ṣel

מִזְבַּ֥ח

miz·baḥ

. הַנְּחֹֽשֶׁת׃

han·nə·ḥō·šeṯ.

the bronze .

וּכְב֣וֹד ׀

ū·ḵə·ḇō·wḏ

And the glory

אֱלֹהֵ֣י

’ĕ·lō·hê

of the God

יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל

yiś·rā·’êl,

נַעֲלָה֙

na·‘ă·lāh

מֵעַ֤ל

mê·‘al

､ הַכְּרוּב֙

hak·kə·rūḇ

the cherub ､

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

､ הָיָ֣ה

hā·yāh

it had been ､

עָלָ֔יו

‘ā·lāw,

אֶ֖ל

’el

to

מִפְתַּ֣ן

mip̄·tan

. הַבָּ֑יִת

hab·bā·yiṯ;

of the temple .

וַיִּקְרָ֗א

way·yiq·rā,

And He called

אֶל־

’el-

to

הָאִישׁ֙

hā·’îš

the man

הַלָּבֻ֣שׁ

hal·lā·ḇuš

､ הַבַּדִּ֔ים

hab·bad·dîm,

אֲשֶׁ֛ר

’ă·šer

קֶ֥סֶת

qe·seṯ

הַסֹּפֵ֖ר

has·sō·p̄êr

of the writer

– בְּמָתְנָֽיו׃

bə·mā·ṯə·nāw.

at his side –

. ס

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and said

יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

[אלו]

’ê·lōw

-

(אֵלָ֔יו)

’ê·lāw,

to

עֲבֹר֙

‘ă·ḇōr

go

בְּת֣וֹךְ

bə·ṯō·wḵ

through the midst

､ הָעִ֔יר

hā·‘îr,

of the city ､

בְּת֖וֹךְ

bə·ṯō·wḵ

through the midst

､ יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם

yə·rū·šā·lim;

of Jerusalem ､

וְהִתְוִ֨יתָ

wə·hiṯ·wî·ṯā

and put

תָּ֜ו

tāw

עַל־

‘al-

on

מִצְח֣וֹת

miṣ·ḥō·wṯ

the foreheads of

הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים

hā·’ă·nā·šîm,

the men

הַנֶּֽאֱנָחִים֙

han·ne·’ĕ·nā·ḥîm

וְהַנֶּ֣אֱנָקִ֔ים

wə·han·ne·’ĕ·nā·qîm,

and cry

עַ֚ל

‘al

כָּל־

kāl-

הַתּ֣וֹעֵב֔וֹת

hat·tō·w·‘ê·ḇō·wṯ,

the abominations

הַֽנַּעֲשׂ֖וֹת

han·na·‘ă·śō·wṯ

. בְּתוֹכָֽהּ׃

bə·ṯō·w·ḵāh.

וּלְאֵ֙לֶּה֙

ū·lə·’êl·leh

And to these

אָמַ֣ר

’ā·mar

､ בְּאָזְנַ֔י

bə·’ā·zə·nay,

in my hearing ､

עִבְר֥וּ

‘iḇ·rū

go

､ בָעִ֛יר

ḇā·‘îr

through the city ､

אַחֲרָ֖יו

’a·ḥă·rāw

– וְהַכּ֑וּ

wə·hak·kū;

and kill –

[על־]

‘al-

-

(אַל־)

’al-

not

תָּחֹ֥ס

tā·ḥōs

[עיניכם]

‘ê·nê·ḵem

-

(עֵינְכֶ֖ם)

‘ê·nə·ḵem

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

. תַּחְמֹֽלוּ׃

taḥ·mō·lū.

have any pity .

זָקֵ֡ן

zā·qên

､ בָּח֣וּר

bā·ḥūr

[and] young men ､

､ וּבְתוּלָה֩

ū·ḇə·ṯū·lāh

and maidens ､

､ וְטַ֨ף

wə·ṭap̄

and little children ､

､ וְנָשִׁ֜ים

wə·nā·šîm

and women ､

תַּהַרְג֣וּ

ta·har·ḡū

לְמַשְׁחִ֗ית

lə·maš·ḥîṯ,

וְעַל־

wə·‘al-

but

כָּל־

kāl-

אִ֨ישׁ

’îš

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

on whom [is]

עָלָ֤יו

‘ā·lāw

– הַתָּו֙

hat·tāw

the mark –

אַל־

’al-

not

תִּגַּ֔שׁוּ

tig·ga·šū,

. וּמִמִּקְדָּשִׁ֖י

ū·mim·miq·dā·šî

and at My sanctuary .

תָּחֵ֑לּוּ

tā·ḥêl·lū;

וַיָּחֵ֙לּוּ֙

way·yā·ḥêl·lū

בָּאֲנָשִׁ֣ים

bā·’ă·nā·šîm

with

הַזְּקֵנִ֔ים

haz·zə·qê·nîm,

אֲשֶׁ֖ר

’ă·šer

לִפְנֵ֥י

lip̄·nê

. הַבָּֽיִת׃

hab·bā·yiṯ.

the temple .

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And He said

אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם

’ă·lê·hem

טַמְּא֣וּ

ṭam·mə·’ū

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַבַּ֗יִת

hab·ba·yiṯ,

the temple ､

וּמַלְא֧וּ

ū·mal·’ū

and fill

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הַחֲצֵר֛וֹת

ha·ḥă·ṣê·rō·wṯ

. חֲלָלִ֖ים

ḥă·lā·lîm

with the slain .

. צֵ֑אוּ

ṣê·’ū;

Go out .

､ וְיָצְא֖וּ

wə·yā·ṣə·’ū

And they went out ､

וְהִכּ֥וּ

wə·hik·kū

. בָעִֽיר׃

ḇā·‘îr.

in the city .

､ וַֽיְהִי֙

way·hî

So it was ､

כְּהַכּוֹתָ֔ם

kə·hak·kō·w·ṯām,

that while they were killing them

､ וְנֵֽאשֲׁאַ֖ר

wə·nê·šă·’ar

and was left [alone] ､

אָ֑נִי

’ā·nî;

I

וָאֶפְּלָ֨ה

wā·’ep·pə·lāh

and I fell

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ פָּנַ֜י

pā·nay

my face ､

､ וָאֶזְעַ֗ק

wā·’ez·‘aq,

and cried out ､

､ וָֽאֹמַר֙

wā·’ō·mar

and said ､

אֲהָהּ֙

’ă·hāh

Ah

אֲדֹנָ֣י

’ă·ḏō·nāy

! יְהוִ֔ה

Yah·weh,

הֲמַשְׁחִ֣ית

hă·maš·ḥîṯ

אַתָּ֗ה

’at·tāh,

אֵ֚ת

’êṯ

-

כָּל־

kāl-

שְׁאֵרִ֣ית

šə·’ê·rîṯ

יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

yiś·rā·’êl,

בְּשָׁפְכְּךָ֥

bə·šā·p̄ə·kə·ḵā

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

חֲמָתְךָ֖

ḥă·mā·ṯə·ḵā

עַל־

‘al-

on

؟ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

yə·rū·šā·lim.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and He said

אֵלַ֗י

’ê·lay,

to me

עֲוֺ֨ן

‘ă·wōn

בֵּֽית־

bêṯ-

of the house

יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל

yiś·rā·’êl

וִֽיהוּדָה֙

wî·hū·ḏāh

､ גָּדוֹל֙

gā·ḏō·wl

[is] great ､

בִּמְאֹ֣ד

bim·’ōḏ

מְאֹ֔ד

mə·’ōḏ,

וַתִּמָּלֵ֤א

wat·tim·mā·lê

and is full

הָאָ֙רֶץ֙

hā·’ā·reṣ

of the land

､ דָּמִ֔ים

dā·mîm,

וְהָעִ֖יר

wə·hā·‘îr

and the city

מָלְאָ֣ה

mā·lə·’āh

– מֻטֶּ֑ה

muṭ·ṭeh;

of perversity –

כִּ֣י

kî

､ אָמְר֗וּ

’ā·mə·rū,

עָזַ֤ב

‘ā·zaḇ

יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הָאָ֔רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ,

the land ､

וְאֵ֥ין

wə·’ên

and not

יְהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

. רֹאֶֽה׃

rō·’eh.

､ וְגַ֨ם־

wə·ḡam-

And also ､

אֲנִ֔י

’ă·nî,

as for Me

לֹא־

lō-

､ תָח֥וֹס

ṯā·ḥō·ws

will spare ､

עֵינִ֖י

‘ê·nî

My eye

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

､ אֶחְמֹ֑ל

’eḥ·mōl;

will I have pity ､

דַּרְכָּ֖ם

dar·kām

בְּרֹאשָׁ֥ם

bə·rō·šām

on their own head

. נָתָֽתִּי׃

nā·ṯāt·tî.

[but] I will recompense .

､ וְהִנֵּ֞ה

wə·hin·nêh

And just then ､

הָאִ֣ישׁ ׀

hā·’îš

the man

לְבֻ֣שׁ

lə·ḇuš

､ הַבַּדִּ֗ים

hab·bad·dîm,

with linen ､

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

’ă·šer

הַקֶּ֙סֶת֙

haq·qe·seṯ

､ בְּמָתְנָ֔יו

bə·mā·ṯə·nāw,

at his side ､

מֵשִׁ֥יב

mê·šîḇ

､ דָּבָ֖ר

dā·ḇār

the matter ､

､ לֵאמֹ֑ר

lê·mōr;

and said ､

עָשִׂ֕יתִי

‘ā·śî·ṯî

[כאשר]

ḵa·’ă·šer

-

(כְּכֹ֖ל‪‬)

kə·ḵōl

as

(אֲשֶׁ֥ר)

’ă·šer

. צִוִּיתָֽנִי׃

ṣiw·wî·ṯā·nî.

You commanded me .
