The Lord Answers Again

‘al-

On

､ מִשְׁמַרְתִּ֣י

miš·mar·tî

my watch ､

אֶעֱמֹ֔דָה

’e·‘ĕ·mō·ḏāh,

I will stand

וְאֶֽתְיַצְּבָ֖ה

wə·’eṯ·yaṣ·ṣə·ḇāh

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ מָצ֑וֹר

mā·ṣō·wr;

the rampart ､

וַאֲצַפֶּ֗ה

wa·’ă·ṣap·peh,

לִרְאוֹת֙

lir·’ō·wṯ

to see

מַה־

mah-

יְדַבֶּר־

yə·ḏab·ber-

He will say

בִּ֔י

bî,

to me

וּמָ֥ה

ū·māh

and what

אָשִׁ֖יב

’ā·šîḇ

I will answer

עַל־

‘al-

. תּוֹכַחְתִּֽי׃

tō·w·ḵaḥ·tî.

I am corrected .

וַיַּעֲנֵ֤נִי

way·ya·‘ă·nê·nî

And answered me

יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

､ וַיֹּ֔אמֶר

way·yō·mer,

and said ､

כְּת֣וֹב

kə·ṯō·wḇ

､ חָז֔וֹן

ḥā·zō·wn,

the vision ､

וּבָאֵ֖ר

ū·ḇā·’êr

and make [it] plain

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ הַלֻּח֑וֹת

hal·lu·ḥō·wṯ;

לְמַ֥עַן

lə·ma·‘an

יָר֖וּץ

yā·rūṣ

ק֥וֹרֵא

qō·w·rê

. בֽוֹ׃

ḇōw.

it .

כִּ֣י

kî

ע֤וֹד

‘ō·wḏ

חָזוֹן֙

ḥā·zō·wn

the vision [is]

､ לַמּוֹעֵ֔ד

lam·mō·w·‘êḏ,

for an appointed time ､

､ וְיָפֵ֥חַ

wə·yā·p̄ê·aḥ

but it will speak ､

לַקֵּ֖ץ

laq·qêṣ

at the end

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not

. יְכַזֵּ֑ב

yə·ḵaz·zêḇ;

it will lie .

אִם־

’im-

､ יִתְמַהְמָהּ֙

yiṯ·mah·māh

it tarries ､

חַכֵּה־

ḥak·kêh-

ל֔וֹ

lōw,

for it

כִּֽי־

kî-

בֹ֥א

ḇō

､ יָבֹ֖א

yā·ḇō

it will come ､

לֹ֥א

lō

not

. יְאַחֵֽר׃

yə·’a·ḥêr.

it will tarry .

､ הִנֵּ֣ה

hin·nêh

עֻפְּלָ֔ה

‘up·pə·lāh,

לֹא־

lō-

not

יָשְׁרָ֥ה

yā·šə·rāh

נַפְשׁ֖וֹ

nap̄·šōw

בּ֑וֹ

bōw;

in him

וְצַדִּ֖יק

wə·ṣad·dîq

but the just

בֶּאֱמוּנָת֥וֹ

be·’ĕ·mū·nā·ṯōw

. יִחְיֶֽה׃

yiḥ·yeh.

וְאַף֙

wə·’ap̄

כִּֽי־

kî-

､ הַיַּ֣יִן

hay·ya·yin

by wine ､

בּוֹגֵ֔ד

bō·w·ḡêḏ,

he transgresses

､ גֶּ֥בֶר

ge·ḇer

[He is] a man ､

יָהִ֖יר

yā·hîr

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not

､ יִנְוֶ֑ה

yin·weh;

he does stay at home ､

אֲשֶׁר֩

’ă·šer

הִרְחִ֨יב

hir·ḥîḇ

､ כִּשְׁא֜וֹל

kiš·’ō·wl

as hell ､

נַפְשׁ֗וֹ

nap̄·šōw,

וְה֤וּא

wə·hū

and he [is]

､ כַמָּ֙וֶת֙

ḵam·mā·weṯ

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

､ יִשְׂבָּ֔ע

yiś·bā‘,

be satisfied ､

וַיֶּאֱסֹ֤ף

way·ye·’ĕ·sōp̄

and He gathers

אֵלָיו֙

’ê·lāw

כָּל־

kāl-

､ הַגּוֹיִ֔ם

hag·gō·w·yim,

וַיִּקְבֹּ֥ץ

way·yiq·bōṣ

and heaps up

אֵלָ֖יו

’ê·lāw

כָּל־

kāl-

. הָעַמִּֽים׃

hā·‘am·mîm.

Woe to the Chaldeans

הֲלוֹא־

hă·lō·w-

Will not

אֵ֣לֶּה

’êl·leh

כֻלָּ֗ם

ḵul·lām,

עָלָיו֙

‘ā·lāw

מָשָׁ֣ל

mā·šāl

יִשָּׂ֔אוּ

yiś·śā·’ū,

וּמְלִיצָ֖ה

ū·mə·lî·ṣāh

חִיד֣וֹת

ḥî·ḏō·wṯ

ל֑וֹ

lōw;

､ וְיֹאמַ֗ר

wə·yō·mar,

and say ､

ה֚וֹי

hō·w

הַמַּרְבֶּ֣ה

ham·mar·beh

to him who increases

לֹּא־

lō-

not

ל֔וֹ

lōw,

עַד־

‘aḏ-

מָתַ֕י

mā·ṯay

וּמַכְבִּ֥יד

ū·maḵ·bîḏ

and who loads himself

עָלָ֖יו

‘ā·lāw

to him

! עַבְטִֽיט׃

‘aḇ·ṭîṭ.

with many pledges !

הֲל֣וֹא

hă·lō·w

will not

פֶ֗תַע

p̄e·ṯa‘,

יָק֙וּמוּ֙

yā·qū·mū

נֹשְׁכֶ֔יךָ

nō·šə·ḵe·ḵā,

וְיִקְצ֖וּ

wə·yiq·ṣū

and will they not awaken

מְזַעְזְעֶ֑יךָ

mə·za‘·zə·‘e·ḵā;

who oppress you

וְהָיִ֥יתָ

wə·hā·yî·ṯā

and you will become

לִמְשִׁסּ֖וֹת

lim·šis·sō·wṯ

. לָֽמוֹ׃

lā·mōw.

כִּֽי‪‬

kî

אַתָּ֤ה

’at·tāh

שַׁלּ֙וֹתָ֙

šal·lō·w·ṯā

､ גּוֹיִ֣ם

gō·w·yim

רַבִּ֔ים

rab·bîm,

יְשָׁלּ֖וּךָ

yə·šāl·lū·ḵā

shall plunder you

כָּל־

kāl-

יֶ֣תֶר

ye·ṯer

עַמִּ֑ים

‘am·mîm;

of the people

､ מִדְּמֵ֤י

mid·də·mê

because of blood ､

אָדָם֙

’ā·ḏām

of men

וַחֲמַס־

wa·ḥă·mas-

and the violence

､ אֶ֔רֶץ

’e·reṣ,

of the land ､

､ קִרְיָ֖ה

qir·yāh

[and] the city ､

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and of all

יֹ֥שְׁבֵי

yō·šə·ḇê

. בָֽהּ׃

ḇāh.

in it .

to him who covets

בֶּ֥צַע

be·ṣa‘

רָ֖ע

rā‘

､ לְבֵית֑וֹ

lə·ḇê·ṯōw;

for his house ､

לָשׂ֤וּם

lā·śūm

that he may set

､ בַּמָּרוֹם֙

bam·mā·rō·wm

on high ､

קִנּ֔וֹ

qin·nōw,

לְהִנָּצֵ֖ל

lə·hin·nā·ṣêl

that he may be delivered

מִכַּף־

mik·kap̄-

! רָֽע׃

rā‘.

יָעַ֥צְתָּ

yā·‘aṣ·tā

You give counsel

בֹּ֖שֶׁת

bō·šeṯ

לְבֵיתֶ֑ךָ

lə·ḇê·ṯe·ḵā;

קְצוֹת־

qə·ṣō·wṯ-

､ עַמִּ֥ים

‘am·mîm

רַבִּ֖ים

rab·bîm

וְחוֹטֵ֥א

wə·ḥō·w·ṭê

and sin

. נַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃

nap̄·še·ḵā.

[against] your soul .

כִּי־

kî-

אֶ֖בֶן

’e·ḇen

､ מִקִּ֣יר

miq·qîr

from the wall ､

תִּזְעָ֑ק

tiz·‘āq;

will cry out

וְכָפִ֖יס

wə·ḵā·p̄îs

and the beam

מֵעֵ֥ץ

mê·‘êṣ

from the timbers

. יַעֲנֶֽנָּה׃

ya·‘ă·nen·nāh.

will answer it .

to him who builds

עִ֖יר

､ בְּדָמִ֑ים

with bloodshed ､

וְכוֹנֵ֥ן

and who establishes

קִרְיָ֖ה

qir·yāh

! בְּעַוְלָֽה׃

bə·‘aw·lāh.

הֲל֣וֹא

[is it] not

､ הִנֵּ֔ה

hin·nêh,

מֵאֵ֖ת

mê·’êṯ

of

יְהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

צְבָא֑וֹת

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ;

וְיִֽיגְע֤וּ

wə·yî·ḡə·‘ū

עַמִּים֙

‘am·mîm

בְּדֵי־

bə·ḏê-

､ אֵ֔שׁ

’êš,

the fire ､

וּלְאֻמִּ֖ים

ū·lə·’um·mîm

בְּדֵי־

bə·ḏê-

in

רִ֥יק

rîq

؟ יִעָֽפוּ׃

yi·‘ā·p̄ū.

weary themselves ؟

כִּ֚י

kî

תִּמָּלֵ֣א

tim·mā·lê

will be filled

הָאָ֔רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ,

לָדַ֖עַת

lā·ḏa·‘aṯ

with the knowledge

אֶת־

’eṯ-

of

כְּב֣וֹד

kə·ḇō·wḏ

､ יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

of Yahweh ､

כַּמַּ֖יִם

kam·ma·yim

as the waters

יְכַסּ֥וּ

yə·ḵas·sū

עַל־

‘al-

on

. יָֽם׃

yām.

the sea .

מַשְׁקֵ֣ה

to him who gives drink to

､ רֵעֵ֔הוּ

rê·‘ê·hū,

his neighbor ､

מְסַפֵּ֥חַ

mə·sap·pê·aḥ

Pressing [him to]

חֲמָתְךָ֖

ḥă·mā·ṯə·ḵā

､ וְאַ֣ף

wə·’ap̄

and Even ､

שַׁכֵּ֑ר

šak·kêr;

to make [him] drunk

לְמַ֥עַן

lə·ma·‘an

הַבִּ֖יט

hab·bîṭ

עַל־

‘al-

on

! מְעוֹרֵיהֶֽם׃

mə·‘ō·w·rê·hem.

his nakedness !

שָׂבַ֤עְתָּ

śā·ḇa‘·tā

קָלוֹן֙

qā·lō·wn

with shame

. מִכָּב֔וֹד

mik·kā·ḇō·wḏ,

instead of glory .

שְׁתֵ֥ה

šə·ṯêh

､ גַם־

ḡam-

also ､

אַ֖תָּה

’at·tāh

– וְהֵֽעָרֵ֑ל

wə·hê·‘ā·rêl;

and be exposed as uncircumcised –

תִּסּ֣וֹב

tis·sō·wḇ

[will be] turned

עָלֶ֗יךָ

‘ā·le·ḵā,

כּ֚וֹס

kō·ws

the cup

יְמִ֣ין

yə·mîn

of the right hand

יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

וְקִיקָל֖וֹן

wə·qî·qā·lō·wn

and utter shame will be

עַל־

‘al-

on

. כְּבוֹדֶֽךָ׃

kə·ḇō·w·ḏe·ḵā.

כִּ֣י

kî

חֲמַ֤ס

ḥă·mas

the violence [done to]

לְבָנוֹן֙

lə·ḇā·nō·wn

יְכַסֶּ֔ךָּ

yə·ḵas·se·kā,

וְשֹׁ֥ד

wə·šōḏ

and the plunder

､ בְּהֵמ֖וֹת

bə·hê·mō·wṯ

of beasts ､

､ יְחִיתַ֑ן

yə·ḥî·ṯan;

[which] made them afraid ､

､ מִדְּמֵ֤י

mid·də·mê

because of blood ､

אָדָם֙

’ā·ḏām

of men

וַחֲמַס־

wa·ḥă·mas-

and the violence

､ אֶ֔רֶץ

’e·reṣ,

of the land ､

､ קִרְיָ֖ה

qir·yāh

[and] the city ､

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and of all

יֹ֥שְׁבֵי

yō·šə·ḇê

. בָֽהּ׃

ḇāh.

of lies ､

בָטַ֞ח

ḇā·ṭaḥ

יֹצֵ֤ר

yō·ṣêr

יִצְרוֹ֙

yiṣ·rōw

､ עָלָ֔יו

‘ā·lāw,

in it ､

לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת

la·‘ă·śō·wṯ

؟ אֱלִילִ֥ים

’ĕ·lî·lîm

. אִלְּמִֽים׃

’il·lə·mîm.

to him who says

､ לָעֵץ֙

to wood ､

– הָקִ֔יצָה

､ לְאֶ֣בֶן

lə·’e·ḇen

to stone ､

דּוּמָ֑ם

dū·mām;

ה֣וּא

hū

it

! יוֹרֶ֔ה

yō·w·reh,

､ הִנֵּה־

hū,

it [is]

תָּפוּשׂ֙

tā·p̄ūś

זָהָ֣ב

zā·hāḇ

with gold

､ וָכֶ֔סֶף

wā·ḵe·sep̄,

and silver ､

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and yet at all

ר֖וּחַ

rū·aḥ

אֵ֥ין

’ên

there is no

. בְּקִרְבּֽוֹ׃

bə·qir·bōw.

in it .

וַֽיהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

But Yahweh is

. בְּהֵיכַ֣ל

bə·hê·ḵal

קָדְשׁ֑וֹ

qā·ḏə·šōw;

הַ֥ס

has

let keep silence

מִפָּנָ֖יו

mip·pā·nāw

כָּל־

kāl-

. הָאָֽרֶץ׃

hā·’ā·reṣ.

the earth .
