A Wise Son Heeds his Father's Instruction

בֵּ֣ן

bên

חָ֭כָם

ḥā·ḵām

､ מ֣וּסַר

mū·sar

instruction ､

אָ֑ב

’āḇ;

וְ֝לֵ֗ץ

wə·lêṣ,

לֹא־

lō-

not

שָׁמַ֥ע

šā·ma‘

. גְּעָרָֽה׃

gə·‘ā·rāh.

מִפְּרִ֣י

mip·pə·rî

By the fruit

– פִי־

p̄î-

of [his] mouth –

אִ֭ישׁ

’îš

יֹ֣אכַל

yō·ḵal

ט֑וֹב

ṭō·wḇ;

וְנֶ֖פֶשׁ

wə·ne·p̄eš

but the soul

בֹּגְדִ֣ים

bō·ḡə·ḏîm

of the unfaithful

. חָמָֽס׃

ḥā·mās.

[feeds] on violence .

נֹצֵ֣ר

nō·ṣêr

פִּ֭יו

pîw

שֹׁמֵ֣ר

šō·mêr

– נַפְשׁ֑וֹ

nap̄·šōw;

פֹּשֵׂ֥ק

pō·śêq

[But] he who opens wide

שְׂ֝פָתָ֗יו

p̄ā·ṯāw,

מְחִתָּה־

mə·ḥit·tāh-

shall have destruction

. לֽוֹ׃

lōw.

to .

､ מִתְאַוָּ֣ה

miṯ·’aw·wāh

､ וָ֭אַיִן

wā·’a·yin

and [has] nothing ､

נַפְשׁ֣וֹ

nap̄·šōw

the soul

עָצֵ֑ל

‘ā·ṣêl;

of a lazy [man]

וְנֶ֖פֶשׁ

wə·ne·p̄eš

but the soul

חָרֻצִ֣ים

ḥā·ru·ṣîm

of the diligent

. תְּדֻשָּֽׁן׃

tə·ḏuš·šān.

shall be made rich .

דְּבַר־

də·ḇa·rō·še-

､ שֶׁ֭קֶר

qer

יִשְׂנָ֣א

yiś·nā

צַדִּ֑יק

ṣad·dîq;

a righteous [man]

וְ֝רָשָׁ֗ע

wə·rā·šā‘,

but a wicked [man]

､ יַבְאִ֥ישׁ

yaḇ·’îš

is loathsome ､

. וְיַחְפִּֽיר׃

wə·yaḥ·pîr.

and comes to shame .

צְ֭דָקָה

ṣə·ḏā·qāh

תִּצֹּ֣ר

tiṣ·ṣōr

תָּם־

tām-

[him whose] is blameless

– דָּ֑רֶךְ

dā·reḵ;

way –

וְ֝רִשְׁעָ֗ה

wə·riš·‘āh,

תְּסַלֵּ֥ף

tə·sal·lêp̄

. חַטָּֽאת׃

ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ.

the sinner .

יֵ֣שׁ

yêš

､ מִ֭תְעַשֵּׁר

miṯ·‘aš·šêr

one who makes himself rich ､

וְאֵ֣ין

wə·’ên

and yet [has] nothing

– כֹּ֑ל

kōl;

all –

､ מִ֝תְרוֹשֵׁ֗שׁ

miṯ·rō·wō·šêš,

[And] one who makes himself poor ､

וְה֣וֹן

wə·hō·wn

and yet [has] riches

. רָֽב׃

rāḇ.

כֹּ֣פֶר

kō·p̄er

נֶֽפֶשׁ־

ne·p̄eš-

of a life

אִ֣ישׁ

’îš

of man

､ עָשְׁר֑וֹ

‘ā·šə·rōw;

[is] his riches ､

וְ֝רָ֗שׁ

wə·rāš,

but the poor

לֹא־

lō-

not

שָׁמַ֥ע

šā·ma‘

. גְּעָרָֽה׃

gə·‘ā·rāh.

אוֹר־

’ō·wr-

צַדִּיקִ֥ים

ṣad·dî·qîm

of the righteous

､ יִשְׂמָ֑ח

yiś·māḥ;

וְנֵ֖ר

wə·nêr

but the lamp

רְשָׁעִ֣ים

rə·šā·‘îm

of the wicked

. יִדְעָֽךְ׃

yiḏ·‘āḵ.

will be put out .

רַק־

raq-

בְּ֭זָדוֹן

bə·zā·ḏō·wn

יִתֵּ֣ן

yit·tên

､ מַצָּ֑ה

maṣ·ṣāh;

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

but with

נ֖וֹעָצִ֣ים

nō·w·‘ā·ṣîm

the well-advised

. חָכְמָֽה׃

ḥāḵ·māh

[is] wisdom .

ה֭וֹן

hō·wn

Wealth [gained]

מֵהֶ֣בֶל

mê·he·ḇel

､ יִמְעָ֑ט

yim·‘āṭ;

will be diminished ､

וְקֹבֵ֖ץ

wə·qō·ḇêṣ

but he who gathers

עַל־

‘al-

by

יָ֣ד

yāḏ

. יַרְבֶּֽה׃

yar·beh.

will increase .

תּוֹחֶ֣לֶת

tō·w·ḥe·leṯ

מְ֭מֻשָּׁכָה

mə·muš·šā·ḵāh

– מַחֲלָה־

ma·ḥă·lāh-

לֵ֑ב

lêḇ;

וְעֵ֥ץ

wə·‘êṣ

but [when it is] a tree

. חַ֝יִּ֗ים

ḥay·yîm,

of life .

תַּאֲוָ֥ה

ta·’ă·wāh

､ בָאָֽה׃

ḇā·’āh.

בָּ֣ז

bāz

He who despises

לְ֭דָבָר

lə·ḏā·ḇār

the word

– יֵחָ֣בֶל

yê·ḥā·ḇel

will be destroyed –

ל֑וֹ

lōw;

to

וִירֵ֥א

wî·rê

but he who fears

מִ֝צְוָ֗ה

miṣ·wāh,

the commandment

ה֣וּא

hū

he

. יְשֻׁלָּֽם׃

yə·šul·lām.

will be rewarded .

תּוֹרַ֣ת

tō·w·raṯ

The law

חָ֭כָם

ḥā·ḵām

of the wise

מְק֣וֹר

mə·qō·wr

[is] a fountain

､ חַיִּ֑ים

ḥay·yîm;

of life ､

לָ֝ס֗וּר

lā·sūr,

to turn [one] away

מִמֹּ֥קְשֵׁי

mim·mō·qə·šê

from the snares

. מָֽוֶת׃

mā·weṯ.

of death .

שֵֽׂכֶל־

śê·ḵel-

ט֭וֹב

ṭō·wḇ

יִתֶּן־

yit·ten-

､ חֵ֑ן

ḥên;

וְדֶ֖רֶךְ

wə·ḏe·reḵ

but the way

בֹּגְדִ֣ים

bō·ḡə·ḏîm

of the unfaithful

. אֵיתָֽן׃

’ê·ṯān.

[is] enduring .

כָּל־

kāl-

עָ֭רוּם

‘ā·rūm

יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה

ya·‘ă·śeh

､ בְדָ֑עַת

ḇə·ḏā·‘aṯ;

with knowledge ､

וּ֝כְסִ֗יל

ū·ḵə·sîl,

but a fool

יִפְרֹ֥שׂ

yip̄·rōś

. אִוֶּֽלֶת׃

’iw·we·leṯ.

מַלְאָ֣ךְ

mal·’āḵ

רָ֭שָׁע

rā·šā‘

יִפֹּ֣ל

yip·pōl

､ בְּרָ֑ע

bə·rā‘;

into trouble ､

וְצִ֖יר

wə·ṣîr

but a ambassador

אֱמוּנִ֣ים

’ĕ·mū·nîm

of faithfulness

. מַרְפֵּֽא׃

mar·pê.

רֵ֣ישׁ

rêš

וְ֭קָלוֹן

wə·qā·lō·wn

פּוֹרֵ֣עַ

pō·w·rê·a‘

[will come] to him who disdains

､ מוּסָ֑ר

mū·sār;

וְשׁוֹמֵ֖ר

wə·šō·w·mêr

but he who regards

תּוֹכַ֣חַת

tō·w·ḵa·ḥaṯ

. יְכֻבָּֽד׃

yə·ḵub·bāḏ.

will be honored .

תַּאֲוָ֣ה

ta·’ă·wāh

נִ֭הְיָה

nih·yāh

תֶּעֱרַ֣ב

ṯe·‘ĕ·raḇ

､ לְנָ֑פֶשׁ

lə·nā·p̄eš;

to the soul ､

וְתוֹעֲבַ֥ת

wə·ṯō·w·‘ă·ḇaṯ

but [it is] an abomination

כְּ֝סִילִ֗ים

kə·sî·lîm,

ס֣וּר

sūr

. מֵרָֽע׃

mê·rā‘.

[הלוך]

hā·lō·wḵ

-

(הוֹלֵ֣ךְ‪‬‪‬)

hō·w·lêḵ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

with

חֲכָמִ֣ים

ḥă·ḵā·mîm

[וחכם]

wa·ḥă·ḵām

-

､ (יֶחְכָּ֑ם)

yeḥ·kām;

will be wise ､

וְרֹעֶ֖ה

wə·rō·‘eh

but the companion

כְסִילִ֣ים

ḵə·sî·lîm

. יֵרֽוֹעַ׃

yê·rō·w·a‘.

will be destroyed .

､ חַ֭טָּאִים

ḥaṭ·ṭā·’îm

The sinful ､

תְּרַדֵּ֣ף

tə·rad·dêp̄

רָעָ֑ה

rā·‘āh;

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

but

צַ֝דִּיקִ֗ים

ṣad·dî·qîm,

to the righteous

יְשַׁלֶּם־

yə·šal·lem-

shall be repaid

. טֽוֹב׃

ṭō·wḇ.

ט֗וֹב

ṭō·wḇ,

יַנְחִ֥יל

yan·ḥîl

leaves an inheritance to

בְּנֵֽי־

bə·nê-

of his children

､ בָנִ֑ים

ḇā·nîm;

וְצָפ֥וּן

wə·ṣā·p̄ūn

but is stored up

לַ֝צַּדִּ֗יק

laṣ·ṣad·dîq,

for the righteous

חֵ֣יל

ḥêl

. חוֹטֵֽא׃

ḥō·w·ṭê.

of the sinner .

רָב־

rāḇ-

אֹ֭כֶל

’ō·ḵel

food [is]

נִ֣יר

nîr

[in] the fallow [ground]

､ רָאשִׁ֑ים

rā·šîm;

of the poor ､

וְיֵ֥שׁ

wə·yêš

and there is

נִ֝סְפֶּ֗ה

nis·peh,

בְּלֹ֣א

bə·lō

. מִשְׁפָּֽט׃

miš·pāṭ.

חוֹשֵׂ֣ךְ

ḥō·w·śêḵ

שִׁ֭בְטוֹ

ḇə·ṭōw

שׂוֹנֵ֣א

śō·w·nê

､ בְנ֑וֹ

ḇə·nōw;

וְ֝אֹהֲב֗וֹ

wə·’ō·hă·ḇōw,

but he who loves him

שִֽׁחֲר֥וֹ

ši·ḥă·rōw

disciplines him

. מוּסָֽר׃

mū·sār.

צַדִּ֗יק

ṣad·dîq,

אֹ֭כֵל

’ō·ḵêl

לְשֹׂ֣בַע

lə·śō·ḇa‘

to the satisfying

､ נַפְשׁ֑וֹ

nap̄·šōw;

of his soul ､

וּבֶ֖טֶן

ū·ḇe·ṭen

but the stomach

רְשָׁעִ֣ים

rə·šā·‘îm

of the wicked

. תֶּחְסָֽר׃

teḥ·sār.

shall be in want .
