the beast that thou sawest, was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, shall wonder when they behold the beast that was, and is not, but shall be.

272

And to the angel of the church in Pergamos, write, "THESE things, saith he, who hath the sharp sword with two edges,

275

the city had no need either of the sun, or of the moon to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the lamb is the luminary thereof.

276

They worshipped the dragon which had given his power to the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, "who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?"

277

that no body should buy or sell unless he had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

278

The dragon then finding that he was precipitated to the earth, persecuted the woman, who brought forth the man-child.

279

he hath leadeth into captivity, shall be led into captivity: he that killeth with the sword, shall perish by the sword. here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

282

notwithstanding, I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezabel, who stiles herself a prophetess, and teaches and seduces my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed to idols.

283

they were vested with breast-plates, as it were of iron; and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots and many horses running to battle.

284

Before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and towards the throne, and round about the throne were four ANIMALS full of eyes before and behind.

285

his tail swept the third part of the stars of heaven; and cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered, in order to devour her child as soon as it was born.

287

they likewise signify seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; when he comes, he will continue but a short space.

288

And I heard the number of those who were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred forty and four thousand, of all the tribes of the children of Israel.

289

so he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet-coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads, and ten horns.

290

these are they who were not defiled with women: for they are virgins: these are they who follow the lamb wherever he goes: these were ransom'd from among men, being the first fruits unto God, and to the lamb.

291

and every creature which is in heaven, on the earth, under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I, saying, "blessing, and honour, and glory, and power be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the lamb for ever and ever."

293

Then he said to me, the waters which you saw, where the prostitute has her seat, are the people, the multitude, nations, and provinces.

294

Then I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, invested with a cloud, a rainbow was upon his head, his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire.

295

but I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there those that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who counselled Balac to ensnare the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit fornication.

296

for all nations have drunk of the poisonous wine of her idolatry, the kings of the earth have submitted to her idolatries, and the merchants of the earth are grown rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

297

and he cried with a strong voice, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the abode of demons, the dungeon of every foul spirit, and a cage of every impure ill-boding bird.

298

I look'd, and there was a white horse; and he that sat on him had a bow, and a crown was given unto him, and he went forth like a conqueror, to gain conquests.

300

when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit, will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them.

301

out of his mouth went a sharp sword, in order to smite the nations: for he shall rule them with an iron sceptre: and tread the wine-press of the fierce vengeance of almighty God.

302

he exercised all the power of the first beast by his authority, and caused the earth, and those who dwell therein, to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

303

and another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given to him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar, which was before the throne.

305

and I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud vioce to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,

306

the conceal'd meaning of the seven stars which you saw in my right hand, and of the seven golden candlesticks, is this: the seven stars signify the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which you saw, signify the seven churches.

307

for just and right are his judgments; for he hath condemned the grand prostitute, who corrupted the earth with her licentiousness, and hath avenged the blood of his servants that were shed by her hand."

308

who publish'd the divine message, and gave his attestation to every thing that he saw concerning Jesus Christ.

309

the meaning is very comprehensive. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.

310

Immediately the FIRST went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisom and grievous ulcer upon the men who had the mark of the beast, and upon those who worshipped his image.

311

I John saw these things, and heard them. and when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel, who shewed me these things.

312

and shall go out to seduce the nations, which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to assemble them to battle: they will be as numerous as the sand of the sea.

313

THEN the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, voices, and thunders, and an earthquake, and great hail.

314

saying, "hurt not the earth, nor the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads."

316

and he deceived the inhabitants of the earth, by the prodigys which he had power to effect by the influence of the beast, by telling the inhabitants of the earth, that he had made an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, but yet did revive.

318

and she brought forth a man-child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up to be with God, and about his throne.

319

again I looked, and I saw a white cloud, and there was sitting upon the cloud one like the son of man, having a crown of gold upon his head,

320

by whom the kings of the earth became idolaters, and the inhabiters of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of idolatry."

322

the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each single gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as splendid as glass.

323

Then I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, with their armies assembled, to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.

325

And the SEVENTH angel poured out his vial into the air; and there a loud voice issued from the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, "it is done."

326

As for the rest of the men who were not killed by these plagues, they did not repent of their evil actions, so as to forbear worshipping demons, and idols of gold and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which can neither see, nor hear, nor walk:

328

he that is unjust, let him be unjust still: he that is filthy, let him be filthy still: he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.

329

and I heard a voice from heaven, which was like the noise of many waters, or like a great thunder-clap: I heard too a sound like that of a harp, when touch'd by the hand of a musician.

330

but when the seventh angel should speak, and the trumpet should sound, the mystery of God should be accomplish'd, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

331

and a new song was sung before the throne, and before the four animals, and the elders: and no one could learn that song, but the hundred forty four thousand, who were ransom'd from the earth.

332

the rich men, the chief captains, and the mighty men, every bond-man, and every free-man, bid themselves in the caverns, and in the rocks of the mountains; and said to the mountains, and to the rocks,

334

the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them the names of the twelve apostles of the lamb.

338

and the woman was arrayed in purple, and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stone and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand, full of the abominable impurities of idolatry.

339

they will spread on the surface of the earth, and encompass the camp of the saints, and the beloved city: and fire shall descend from God out of heaven, and devour them.

340

THEN I heard a terrible voice from the temple, crying to the seven angels, "go pour out the VIALS of divine vengeance upon the earth."

341

their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which in the mystical stile is called Sodom and Egypt, where our Lord was crucified.

342

the ten horns which you saw upon the beast, they shall hate the whore, they shall plunder, and strip her, eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

343

and I saw as it were a sea of glass, mingled with fire; and those that had been victorious over the beast, and over his image, and over the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, with their divine harps in their hands.

345

therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall cover them, as a pavillion.

346

her walls were large and high; the gates were twelve; and at the gates twelve angels, with the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel inscrib'd thereon.

347

the beast that was, and is not, is himself the eighth: he is of the seven, and shall be destroy'd.

348

the kings of the earth, the accomplices of her licentiousness and luxury, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her conflagration,

349

remember therefore what thou hast received and heard: observe it and repent. if therefore thou art not vigilant, I will come upon thee as a thief, thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

350

and he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and those that dwell in heaven,

351

He subjoin'd, "don't seal the prophetic discourses of this book: for the time draws nigh.

353

The FOURTH angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given to him to scorch mankind with its fire.

355

And the FIFTH angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness, and they gnawed their tongues for pain.

356

And the second angel sounded, and a great mountain as it were all on fire was cast into the sea; and the third part of the sea became blood:

357

you shall see I will make those of the synagogue of satan, who say they are Jews, and are not, but do lye: you shall see I will make them come, and throw themselves at your feet, and they shall know that you are the objects of my love.

358

I saw another prodigy in heaven, great and marvellous, SEVEN ANGELS, having the seven last plagues, for by them the divine vengeance is consummated.

359

and sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created the heaven and all that is therein, the earth and all that is therein, the sea and all that is therein, "that the time should be no longer defer'd."

360

The SECOND angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.

361

the foundations of the citywall were embellished with all manner of precious stones. the first foundation was of jasper; the second, of sapphire; the third, of chalcedony; the fourth, of an emerald;

362

the wall was built of jasper; and the city was of pure gold, as pure as glass.

363

for God hath put it in their hearts to execute his designs, in agreeing to give their kingdom to the beast, until the divine oracles shall be accomplished.

364

give her torment and pain in proportion to her pride and luxury; for she said in her heart, "I am enthron'd like a queen, I am no widow, and shall see no sorrow."

365

the merchants of the earth shall bewail and mourn over her, because there are none to purchase their cargo:

366

I saw likewise an angel standing upon the sun; and he cryed with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, "come and gather your selves together to the supper of the great God;

367

I shall soon come: happy is he that attends to the prophecies of this book."

368

Immediately I was in an extasy: and I saw a throne placed in heaven, and one sitting on the throne.

369

and the angel said to me, wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystical meaning of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.

370

his eyes were as a flame of fire, on his head were many crowns: and a name inscrib'd which no one comprehended, but himself:

371

the city was a square, the length being as large as the breadth: he measured the city with the reed, and found it twelve thousand furlongs: the length, the breadth, and the height of it were equal.

372

and men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, who hath power over these plagues: and they repented not, to give him glory.

373

it blaz'd with the glory of God: her luminary was like that of a brilliant, even like a jasper, as transparent as crystal.

374

therefore shall her plagues come, mortality, mourning, and famine all at once: and she shall be consumed with fire: for the Lord God, who condemns her, is almighty.

375

and a voice came out of the throne, saying, "praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great."

376

if any man have an ear, let him hear.

378

nor their cinnamon, perfumes, essences, and frankincense; nor their wine, oil, fine flour, and wheat; their cattle, sheep, horses, and chariots; nor the servile souls of men.

379

The THIRD angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains; and they became blood.

380

the fifth, of sardonyx; the sixth, of sardius; the seventh, of chrysolite; the eighth, of beryl; the ninth, of a topaz; the tenth, of a chrysoprasus; the elventh, of a jacinth; the twelfth, of an amethyst.

381

again they said, "alleluia." and her smoke. rose up for ever and ever.

382

frightned at her torments they will stand afar off, and cry, "alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! what! is thy condemnation so suddenly come?"

384

he measured the wall, and it was an hundred and forty four cubits, according to the common measure, which was what the angel employed.

385

and I heard the angel of the waters say, "thou art just, who art, and hast always been holy, because thou hast judged thus:

386

After that I looked, and the tabernacle of the testimony in the heavenly temple was opened:

387

but he said to me, "forbear, I am the servant of God, as you are, and your brethren the prophets, and those who observe the words of this book: worship God."

388

they all agree in this, to give their power and strength to the beast.

389

for her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembred her iniquities.

390

and I heard another from the altar say, "oh! Lord God almighty, true and just are thy judgments."

391

reward her according to her dealings, and repay her double, according to her works: give her twice as much in the same cup which she gave you to drink,

392

her wealth is all sunk in a moment! the pilots and the passengers: the ships-crew, and the super-cargo's shall stand afar off,

393

for they have shed the blood of saints and prophets: thou hast given them blood to drink; for they have deserv'd it."

394

he that talked with me, had a golden reed to measure the city, its gates, and its walls.

395

their gold, and silver, precious stones, and pearls, fine linnen, and purple, their silk, scarlet, and all sort of citron wood, their various vessels of ivory, and of precious wood, of brass, iron, and marble:

396

then the seven angels, who held the seven plagues, came out of the temple, cloathed in pure white linen, wearing upon their breasts girdles of gold.

397

that ye may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses, and of those that ride on them, the flesh of all that are free, and all that are slaves, both small and great."

398

and blasphemed the God of heaven, because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

399

crying, alas, alas, that great city, that was cloathed in fine linnen, purple, and scarlet: decked with gold, precious stones and pearls:

400

the fruits, the object of your delight, are departed from thee, all your delicacy and magnificence are lost, beyond the possibility of a recovery! the merchants

401

and one of the four animals gave to the seven angels, seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever.

402

the temple was filled with smoke from the emanations of divine power; and no one could enter into the temple, till the seven plagues were executed by the seven angels.

403

and cry out, when they see the smoke of her burning, what city could be compar'd to this great city?

404

on the east were three gates; on the north, three gates; on the south, three gates; and three gates on the west.

405

of these wares who were enrich'd by her, shall stand afar off, under the dread of her torments, with tears and lamentations,
