Matthew 22:23-33 - A Question About Marriage And The Resurrection

Matthew 22:23-33

23 The same day came to him the Sadducees, who say that there is no resurrection, and asked him, 24 Saying, Teacher, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up children unto his brother. 25 Now there were with us seven brothers: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no child, left his wife unto his brother: 26 Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh. 27 And last of all the woman died also. 28 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.

29 Jesus answered and said unto them, You do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. 31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, 32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

33 And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.

Mark 12:18-27

18 Then came unto him the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying, 19 Teacher, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother dies, and leaves his wife behind him, and leaves no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up children unto his brother. 20 Now there were seven brothers: and the first took a wife, and dying left no children. 21 And the second took her, and died, neither left he any children: and the third likewise. 22 And the seven had her, and left no children: last of all the woman died also. 23 In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her as wife.

24 And Jesus answering said unto them, Do you not therefore err, because you know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? 25 For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels who are in heaven. 26 And concerning the dead, that they rise: have you not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spoke unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? 27 He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: you therefore do greatly err.

Luke 20:27-40

27 Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, who deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him, 28 Saying, Teacher, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up children for his brother. 29 There were therefore seven brothers: and the first took a wife, and died without children. 30 And the second took her as wife, and he died childless. 31 And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died. 32 Last of all the woman died also. 33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her as wife.

34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: 35 But they who shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: 36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. 37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses showed at the bush, when he called the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.

39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Teacher, you have well said. 40 And after that they dared not ask him any question at all.
