John 6:60-71 - Many Disciples Desert Jesus

So many of His disciples, when they heard it, said, "This teaching is hard to take in. Who can listen to it?"

But as Jesus naturally knew that His disciples were grumbling about this, He said to them, "Is this shocking to you? 62 Suppose you were to see the Son of Man going back where He was before? 63 The Spirit is what gives life; the flesh does not help at all. The truths that I have told you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not trust in me." For Jesus knew from the start who they were that did not trust in Him, and who it was that was going to betray Him. 65 So He continued, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me, unless it is granted to him by my Father."

As a result of this many of His disciples turned their backs on Him and stopped accompanying Him. 67 So Jesus said to the Twelve, "You too do not want to go back, do you?"

Simon Peter answered Him, "To whom can we go, Lord? You have the message that gives eternal life, 69 and we have come to believe, yes more, we know by experience, that you are the Holy One of God."

Jesus answered them, "Did I not myself select you as the Twelve? And yet one of you is a devil." 71 He was referring to Judas, Simon Iscariot's son, for he was going to betray Him, although he was one of the Twelve.
