Matthew 12:1-8 - Plucking Grain On The Sabbath

¹ At that time Jesus went through the grain fields on the Sabbath, and his disciples were hungry and began to pluck ears, and to eat. ² But the Pharisees, when they saw it, said to him, Behold, thy disciples do what is not permitted to do upon the Sabbath.

³ But he said to them, Have ye not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those with him, ⁴ how he entered into the house of God, and ate the loaves of the presentation, which was not permitted for him to eat, nor for those with him, except only for the priests? ⁵ Or have ye not read in the law, that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are guiltless? ⁶ But I say to you, that a greater than the temple is here. ⁷ But if ye had known what this means, I desire mercy and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the innocent. ⁸ For the Son of man is Lord of the Sabbath.

²³ And it came to pass, that he was passing through the grain fields on the Sabbath day, and his disciples began to make a path while plucking the ears. ²⁴ And the Pharisees said to him, Look, why are they doing what is not permitted on the Sabbath day?

²⁵ And he said to them, Did ye never read what David did when he had need, and was hungry, he and those with him? ²⁶ How he entered into the house of God under Abiathar the high priest, and ate the loaves of the presentation, which is not permitted to eat except for the priests. And he also gave to those who were with him? ²⁷ And he said to them, The Sabbath came into being for sake of man, and not man for sake of the Sabbath. ²⁸ So then the Son of man is lord even of the Sabbath.

³ And having answered them, Jesus said, Have ye not read even this, what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him, ⁴ how he entered into the house of God, and took and ate the loaves of the presentation, and also gave to those who were with him, which is not permitted to eat, except the priests alone? ⁵ And he said to them, The Son of man is lord also of the Sabbath.
