Matthew 12:1-8 - Plucking Grain On The Sabbath

¹ AT that time Jesus walked through corn-fields on a sabbath-day; and his disciples were hungry, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. ² But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, Behold, thy disciples do a thing that it is not lawful to do on the sabbath.

³ And he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was hungry, and they who were with him? ⁴ how they went into the house of God, and did eat the loaves of shew-bread, of which it was not lawful for him or those who were with him to eat, but for the priests alone? ⁵ Or have ye not read in the law, that on the sabbaths the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are not culpable? ⁶ Now I tell you, That one greater than the temple is here. ⁷ But if ye had known what that meant, I desire mercy and not sacrifice; ye would not have condemned the innocent. ⁸ For the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

²³ And he was walking through the cornfields on the sabbath; and his disciples as they went on the road plucked the ears of corn. ²⁴ And the Pharisees said to him, See, why are they doing on the sabbath, what is not lawful?

²⁵ And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he was under necessity, and was hungry, himself and they who were with him? ²⁶ How he entered into the house of God to Abiathar the high-priest; and did eat the shewbread, which it was not lawful for any to eat except the priests, and he gave also to those who were with him? ²⁷ And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. ²⁸ Wherefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

¹ AND it came to pass on the sabbath after the second day of the passover, that he was passing through the cornfields; and the disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them out in their hands. ² Then said some of the Pharisees unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful on the sabbath-day?

³ And Jesus answering said to them; Have ye never read what David did, when he was hungry, and those who were with him? ⁴ how he entered into the house of God, and took the loaves of shew-bread, and did eat, and gave also to those who were with him; which it was not lawful for any to eat, but the priests alone? ⁵ And he said, The Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath-day.
