Matthew 8:18-22 - Would-Be Followers

¹⁸ Now when Jesus saw a large crowd around him, he gave orders to go to the other side of the lake. ¹⁹ Then an expert in the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."

²⁰ Jesus said to him, "Foxes have dens, and the birds in the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."

²¹ Another of the disciples said to him, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father."

²² But Jesus said to him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."

⁵⁷ As they were walking along the road, someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."

⁵⁸ Jesus said to him, "Foxes have dens and the birds in the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." ⁵⁹ Jesus said to another, "Follow me." But he replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."

⁶⁰ But Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God."

⁶¹ Yet another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say goodbye to my family."

⁶² Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."
