1. The second son of Jesse (1Sa 16:8; 17:13; 1Ch 2:13). 2. A son of Saul slain in the battle of Mt. Gilboa (1Sa 31:2 = 1Ch 10:2). 3. Owner of the house whither the ark was brought by the men of Kiriath-jearim (1Sa 7:1), whence it was subsequently removed by David (2Sa 6:3 f., 1Ch 13:7).

Then the people of Kiriath Jearim came and took the ark of the Lord; they brought it to the house of Abinadab located on the hill. They consecrated Eleazar his son to guard the ark of the Lord.
Then Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel. But Samuel said, "The Lord has not chosen this one, either."
Jesse's three oldest sons had followed Saul to war. The names of the three sons who went to war were Eliab, his firstborn, Abinadab, the second oldest, and Shammah, the third oldest.
