Reference: Blain
Hastings
A blain is an inflammatory swelling on the body. In one of the plagues of Egypt the dust became a 'boil breaking forth with blains upon man and upon beast' (Ex 9:9-10). See Botch, Medicine, and cf. Wyclif's tr of Job 2:7 'He smot Iob with the werste stinkende bleyne fro the sole of the fot unto the nol.' The word is still retained in the compound chilblain.
