of Israel in Egypt (Ex 2:23,25; 5), which is called the "house of bondage" (Ex 13:3; 20:2). This word is used also with reference to the captivity in Babylon (Isa 14:3), and the oppression of the Persian king (Ezr 9:8-9).

And it happened after many days the king of Egypt died. And the sons of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.

For we were slaves, yet our God has not left us in our bondage, but has given mercy to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us some life, to set up the house of our God, and to repair its waste, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.
