(Joe 2:20; Eze 47:18), the Dead Sea, which lay on the east side of the Holy Land. The Mediterranean, which lay on the west, was hence called the "great sea for the west border" (Nu 34:6).
'As for the western border, you shall have the Great Sea, that is, its coastline; this shall be your west border.
"The east side, from between Hauran, Damascus, Gilead and the land of Israel, shall be the Jordan; from the north border to the eastern sea you shall measure. This is the east side.
"But I will remove the northern army far from you, And I will drive it into a parched and desolate land, And its vanguard into the eastern sea, And its rear guard into the western sea And its stench will arise and its foul smell will come up, For it has done great things."
Joe 2:20; Eze 47:18. Literally, the front sea, i.e. the Dead Sea, which one looking E. would face; "the utmost (hinder) sea" is the Mediterranean, at such a one's back (Nu 34:6).
