A city in the plain of Judah, Jos 15:36, probably the same with the preceding Geder, and with Beth-Gader, 1Ch 2:51. It would thence seem to have pertained to the family of Caleb.

Easton

the fortress; a fortified place, a town in the plain (shephelah) of Judah (Jos 15:36). This is a very common Canaanite and Phoenician name. It is the feminine form of Geder (Jos 12:13); the plural form is Gederoth (Jos 15:41). This place has by some been identified with Jedireh, a ruin 9 miles from Lydda, toward Eleutheropolis, and 4 miles north of Sur'ah (Zorah), in the valley of Elah.

("the sheepcote".) A town of Judah in the shephelah, or hills between the mountains and plain (Jos 15:36). Near the "valley of the terebinth", near Azekah and Socoh. (See ELAH.) GEDEROTH "sheepcotes", and GEDEROTHAIM "two sheepcotes", were in the same region (Jos 15:41).

Hastings

AV of 1Ch 4:23 b reads, 'Those that dwell among plants (Revised Version margin 'plantations') and hedges,' but RV gives 'the inhabitants of Netaim and Gederah,' and this is probably the correct rendering. In that case the Gederah referred to would probably be the city of that name located by Jos 15:36 in the Sheph
