the descendants of Kohath. They formed the first of the three divisions of the Levites (Ex 6:16,18; Nu 3:17). In the journeyings of the Israelites they had the charge of the most holy portion of the vessels of the tabernacle, including the ark (Nu 4). Their place in the marching and encampment was south of the tabernacle (Nu 3:29,31). Their numbers at different times are specified (Nu 3:28; 4:36; 26:57,62). Samuel was of this division.

These are the names of Levi's sons according to their genealogies: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. Levi lived 137 years.
Kohath's descendants included Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. Now Kohath lived for 133 years.
all the males a month old and above numbered 8,600. They were tasked to the care of the sanctuary. The descendants of Kohath encamped beside the tent toward the south.
Their duties pertained to the ark, the table, the lamp stand, the altars, the utensils of the sanctuary with which they ministered, and all the curtains in use.
Those who were numbered from the descendants of Levi, listed according to their families, included: From Gershon, the family of the descendants of Gershon; from Kohath, the family of the descendants of Kohath; and from Merari, the family of the descendants of Merari.
All of those individuals numbered 23,000. No male from the age of a month and above was numbered among the Israelis because no inheritance was to be assigned to them among the Israelis.
