The Lord referred to what was said to 'the ancients' by Moses. Mt 5:21,33. (The words are omitted from Mt 5:27 by the editors.) Moses had been proclaimed 'from old time' in the synagogues. Ac 15:21.
"You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.'
"You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY';
"Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD.'
"For Moses from ancient generations has in every city those who preach him, since he is read in the synagogues every Sabbath."
