Reference: Phut, Put
Morish
Third son of Ham, the name being also applied to his descendants, and to the district they inhabited. Ge 10:6; 1Ch 1:8; Eze 27:10; Na 3:9. The land of Phut is generally supposed to be the same as Libya, to the N.W. of Egypt. A broken fragment of the annals of Nebuchadnezzar mentions 'the city of Phut-Yavan,' or 'Phut of the Ionians' (that is Greeks). This however may refer to a different people. The same Hebrew word is translated Libya in Eze 30:5; 38:5; and Libyans in Jer 46:9.

elsewhere applied to an African country or people. The few mentions of Phut in the Bible clearly indicate a country or people of Africa, and, it must be added, probably not far from Egypt.

Some identify it with Libya, in the northern part Africa near the Mediterranean Sea; others, as Mr. Poole, with Nubia, south of Egypt.
