In the old English sense, means alive, or living. Nu 16:30; 2Ti 4:1; and quicken, to make alive. God bestows spiritual life on men dead in trespasses and sins, Eph 2:5, through Christ the second Adam, who is a quickening Spirit, 1Co 15:45.
"But if the LORD brings about an entirely new thing and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that is theirs, and they descend alive into Sheol, then you will understand that these men have spurned the LORD."
So also it is written, "The first MAN, Adam, BECAME A LIVING SOUL " The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
