The Nazarites were forbidden to make use of the razor (Nu 6:5; Jg 13:5). At their consecration the Levites were shaved all over with a razor (Nu 8:7; comp. Ps 52:2; Eze 5:1).

All the days of the vow of his separation and abstinence there shall no razor come upon his head. Until the time is completed for which he separates himself to the Lord, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow long.

Besides other usages, the practice of shaving the head after the completion of a vow must have created among the Jews a necessity for the special trade of a barber.

He who is to be cleansed shall wash his clothes, shave off all his hair, and bathe himself in water; and he shall be clean. After that he shall come into the camp, but stay outside his tent seven days.
