In 2Ki 17:3; 18:9-11 the Shalmaneser is obviously a king of Assyria who succeeded Tiglath-pileser (wh. see) and preceded Sargon. This was Shalmaneser iv., who reigned over Assyria b.c. 727
Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against him, and Hoshea became his servant and paid him tribute.
