1. An ancestor of Samuel (1Sa 1:1; 1Ch 6:35 (20); called in 1Ch 6:26 (11) Zophai). 2. The land of Zuph (1Sa 9:5) probably derived its name from having been originally settled by the family of Zuph. The gentilic name Zuphite probably underlies the name Ramathaim-zophim of 1Sa 1:1. No known site can be said to contain any certain trace of the name Zuph.

only. It evidently contained the city in which they encountered Samuel, ver. 6, and that again was certainly not far from the "tomb of Rachel." It may perhaps be identified with Soba, a well-known place about seven miles due west of Jerusalem.
