This world is now in process of judgment; the prince of this world is now to be expelled.

He said this to show the kind of death He was going to die.

The crowd answered Him, "We have learned from the law that the Christ is to remain here forever, and so how can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?"

While you have the light believe in the light, that you may become sons of light." On saying this Jesus went away and hid Himself.

Isaiah said this, because he saw His glory; yes, he spoke about Him.

And yet in spite of all this, even among the leading men many came to believe in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not own it, for fear of being turned out of the synagogue,

This is because I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who has sent me has given me orders Himself what to say and what to tell.

For He knew who was going to betray Him; this is why He said, "You are not all clean."

If you know all this, happy are you if you practice it.

After saying this Jesus was deeply moved in spirit and solemnly said, "I most solemnly say to you, one of you is going to betray me."

But no one else at the table knew what He meant by this,

By this everybody will know that you are my disciples, if you keep on showing love for one another."

"I have told you this while I am still staying with you.

And now I have told you this before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe in me.

"I shall not talk much more with you, for the evil ruler of this world is coming and he has nothing in common with me,

By your continuously bearing abundant fruit and in this way proving yourselves to be real disciples of mine, my Father is glorified.

This is my command to you, to keep on loving one another as I have loved you.

No one can show greater love than this, the giving of his life for his friends.

They will do all this to you on account of me, because they do not know Him who has sent me.

But this is so that the saying written in their law may be fulfilled, 'They hated me without a cause.'

They will do this, because they have never come to know God nor me.

about judgment, because the evil ruler of this world has been condemned.

Everything that the Father has is mine; this is why I have told you, 'He will take the things that are mine and tell them to you.'

Jesus knew that they wanted to ask Him a question, and so He said to them, "Are you inquiring of one another about this saying of mine, 'In just a little while you will not see me, and yet in just a little while after you will see me again'?

Up to this time you have not asked for anything as bearers of my name, but now you must keep on asking, and you will receive, that your cup of joy may be full to the brim.

Now we know that you know everything and do not need that anyone should ask you questions. For this reason we believe that you have come from God."

"I make this petition, not for them only, but for all who ever come to believe in me through their message,

He said this that the statement He had just made might be fulfilled, "I have not lost one of those whom you have given me."

but Peter stood outside before the door. So this other disciple, who was acquainted with the high priest, stepped out and spoke to the woman doorkeeper and brought Peter in.

Then the servant girl at the door said to Peter, "You too are not one of this man's disciples, are you?" He answered, "No, I am not."

After He had said this, one of the attendants standing by slapped Jesus in the face, and said, "Is this the way you answer the high priest?"

So Pilate came outside and asked, "What is the charge you bring against this man?"

This made it possible for the word of Jesus to be fulfilled which He spoke to indicate what sort of death He was to die.

Jesus answered him, "Do you ask me this on your own initiative, or have others suggested it to you about me?"

Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants would have been fighting to keep me from being turned over to the Jews. But as a matter of fact, my kingdom does not come from such a source."

Then Pilate said to Him, "So you are a king then?" Jesus answered, "Certainly I am a king. For this very purpose I was born, for this very purpose I have come into the world, to testify for truth. Everybody who is a friend of truth listens to my voice."

Pilate asked Him, "What is truth?" On saying this he went outside again to the Jews, and said to them, "As far as I can see, I can find no ground for a charge against Him.

Because of this Pilate kept on trying to set Him free, but the Jews shouted, "If you set Him free, you are no friend to the emperor. Anyone who claims to be a king is uttering treason against the emperor!"

On hearing this Pilate had Jesus brought out and had Him sit on the judge's bench at the place called the Stone Platform, or in Hebrew, Gabbatha.

Many of the Jews read this placard, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.

So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but let us draw for it to see who gets it." This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, "They divided my clothes among them, and for my clothing they cast lots." Now this was what the soldiers did.

After this, as Jesus knew that everything was now finished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, He said, "I am thirsty."

For this took place that this Scripture might be fulfilled, "Not a bone of His will be broken."

After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one because of his fear of the Jews, asked permission of Pilate to remove the body of Jesus, and Pilate granted it. So he went and removed His body.

On saying this she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus.

Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples that she had seen the Lord and that He had told her this.

On saying this, He showed them His hands and His side, and the disciples were thrilled with joy over seeing their Lord.

On saying this, He breathed upon them, and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit!

Now there are many other wonder-works which Jesus performed in the disciples' presence which are not recorded in this book.

After this Jesus again showed Himself to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias, and this is the way He showed Himself.

This was now the third time that Jesus showed Himself to His disciples, after He had risen from the dead.

He said this to point out the sort of death by which Peter was to glorify God. So after He had said this, He said to Peter, "Keep on following me!"

So the report got out among the brothers that this disciple was not going to die. But Jesus did not tell him that he was not going to die; He said only, "If I wish him to wait until I come, what is that to you?"

This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down, and we know that his testimony is true.

So those who were present began to ask Him, "Lord, is this the time when you are going to set up the kingdom again for Israel?"

After saying this, He was taken up while they were looking at Him, and a cloud swept under Him and carried Him out of their sight.

and said to them, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This very Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will come back in just the way you have seen Him go up into heaven."

for he was one of our number, and he received a share in this ministry of ours.

(This man bought a piece of land with the money which he took for his treachery, and he fell there face downward and his body broke in two, and all his intestines poured out.

It became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that this piece of land was called in their language Akeldamach, that is, The Field of Blood.)

to take a share in this service as an apostle, from which Judas fell away to go to his own place."

And when this sound was heard, the crowd rushed together in great excitement, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.

And thus they all continued to be astounded and bewildered, and continued to say to each other, "What can this mean?"

Then Peter stood with the Eleven around him, and raising his voice he addressed them, "Men of Judea and all you residents of Jerusalem, let me explain this to you, and give close attention to my words.

But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

this very Jesus, I say, after He was betrayed, in accordance with the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you had wicked men kill by nailing Him to a cross;

"Brothers, I may confidently say to you about the patriarch David, that he died and was buried, and that his grave is here among us to this very day.

"Therefore, let all the descendants of Israel understand beyond a doubt that God has made this Jesus whom you crucified both Lord and Christ."

When they heard this, they were stabbed to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"

When Peter saw this, he said to the people, "Fellow Israelites, why are you so surprised at this? Why do you keep staring at us, as though we had by our own power or piety made this man walk?

It is His name, that is, on condition of faith in His name, that has made strong again this man whom you see and recognize -- yes, faith inspired by Him has given this man the perfect health you all see.

But in this way God fulfilled what He by the lips of all the prophets foretold, that the Christ should suffer.

They had the men stand before them and repeatedly inquired of them, "By what sort of power and authority have you done this?"

you and all the people of Israel must know that it is by the authority of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead -- yes, I repeat it, it is by His authority that this man stands here before you well.

But to keep it from spreading farther among the people, let us severely threaten them not to say anything at all to anyone else about this person."

When they heard this, with one united prayer to God they said: "O Lord, you are the Maker of heaven, earth, and sea, and everything that is in them, and the One

"For in this city they actually met against your holy Servant Jesus, whom you had consecrated -- Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the heathen and the peoples of Israel,

"Go and take your stand in the temple square and continue to tell the people the message of this new life."

When the military commander of the temple square and the high priest heard this, they were utterly at a loss to know how this might turn out.

"Did we not positively forbid you to teach anymore on this authority, and yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and now want to bring on us the people's vengeance for this man's death!"

God has exalted to His right hand this very One as our Leader and Saviour, in order to give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.

When they heard this, they were furious, and wanted to kill them.

So in the present case, I warn you, stay away from these men, let them alone. For, if this program or movement has its origin in men, it will go to pieces,

So, brothers, you must select from your number seven men of good standing, full of the Spirit, and of good practical sense, and we will assign them to this business,

This suggestion was approved by the whole body, and so they selected Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, Philip, Procorus, Nikanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, who was a convert to Judaism.

By this means they excited the people, the elders, and the scribes, and so they rushed upon him, seized him, and brought him before the council.

Then they put up false witnesses who said, "This man never stops saying things against this holy place and against the law,

for we have heard him say that Jesus of Nazareth will tear this place down, and change the customs which Moses handed down to us."

So he left the country of the Chaldeans and for a time made his home in Haran. Then after the death of his father, God had him move to this country in which you now live.

This is what God promised: 'His descendants will be strangers living in a foreign land, and its people will enslave and oppress them for four hundred years.'

But God further promised: 'I will pass sentence on the nation that enslaves them, and after that they will leave that country and worship me on this very spot.'

At this time Moses was born. He was a divinely beautiful child. For three months he was cared for in his father's house.

At this statement Moses fled, and went and lived in the land of Midian, and became the father of two sons.

It was this Moses who said to the descendants of Israel, 'God will raise up a prophet for you from among you, just as He did me.'

This is the one who in the congregation in the desert went between the angel, who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and our forefathers, who also received, to be handed down to you, utterances that still live.

and they said to Aaron, 'Make us gods to march in front of us, for as for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him!'

This tent our forefathers brought in and passed on when under Joshua they dispossessed the nations which God drove out before them, and it remained until the time of David.

As they continued to listen to this address, they were becoming infuriated and began to grind their teeth at him.

Then he fell on his knees and cried out, "Lord, do not charge this sin on the book against them!" On saying this he fell asleep in death.

and said, "Give me this power too, that when I lay my hands on anyone he may receive the Holy Spirit."
