“Man is also disciplined with pain on his bed,
And with unceasing complaint in his bones,

His flesh is consumed from being seen, And high are his bones, they were not seen!

If now there may be an angel sent to him, one of the thousands which there are to be between him and God, and to make clear to man what is right for him;

If there are words -- answer me, Speak, for I have a desire to justify thee.

For words are tested by the ear, as food is tasted by the mouth.

If you are wise, take note of this; give ear to the voice of my words.

Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly?

In a moment they die, even at midnight; The people are shaken and pass away, And the mighty are taken away without hand.

Therefore he knoweth their works, and he overturneth them in the night, so that they are destroyed.

Insomuch that they have caused the voice of the poor to come unto him, and now he heareth the complaint of such as are in necessity.

"Men of understanding, speak to me! Are any of you men wise? Then listen to me!

Would that Job were tested up to [the] end because [his] answers [are] like [those from] men of mischief,


“Do you think this is according to [your] justice?
Do you say, ‘My righteousness is more than God’s’?


“If you have sinned, what do you accomplish against Him?
And if your transgressions are multiplied, what have you done to Him?


“If you are righteous, what do you give God,
Or what does He receive from your hand?


“Your wickedness affects only a man such as you,
And your righteousness affects only a son of man [but it cannot affect God, who is sovereign].

Because the hand of the cruel is hard on them, men are making sounds of grief; they are crying out for help because of the arm of the strong.

There they are crying out because of the pride of the evil-doers, but he gives them no answer.


“Even though you say that you do not see Him [when missing His righteous judgment on earth],
Yet your case is before Him, and you must wait for Him!

Honour me a little, and I shew thee, That yet for God are words.

His eyes are ever on the upright, and he gives to the crushed their right;

He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous: but with kings are they on the throne; yea, he doth establish them for ever, and they are exalted.

And if prisoners in fetters They are captured with cords of affliction,

then he declares their work to them, and their transgressions, that they are behaving arrogantly.


“They die in youth,
And their life ends among the cult prostitutes.

He'll deliver the afflicted through their afflictions and open their ears when they are oppressed."

And the judgment of the wicked thou hast fulfilled, Judgment and justice are upheld -- because of fury,

Who ordained his path for him, and who has asked him, "You are wrong, aren't you?'

All people are looking on it; man sees it from far.

And who has knowledge of how the clouds are stretched out, or of the thunders of his tent?

His hands are covered with lightning that he commands to strike his designated target.


“His thundering voice declares [awesomely] His presence;
The cattle also are told of His coming storm.


“God seals (brings to a standstill, stops) [by severe weather] the hand of every man,
That all men [whom He has made] may know His work [that is, His sovereign power and their subjection to it].

And they are turned every way by his guidance, that they may do whatsoever he commandeth them upon the face of the circuit of the earth,


“Do you know about the layers of thick clouds [and how they are balanced and poised in the heavens],
The wonderful works of Him who is perfect in knowledge,

How thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind?

Hast thou helped him to spread out the heavens, which are strong and bright as a looking glass?


“Tell us [Job] what words [of man] shall we say to such a Being;
We cannot state our case because of darkness [that is, our ignorance in the presence of the unsearchable God].

There is no searching out of the Ruler of all: his strength and his judging are great; he is full of righteousness, doing no wrong.

Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

To take hold on the skirts of the earth, And the wicked are shaken out of it,

The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its features are dyed like a garment.

so you can lead it back to its border?
Are you familiar with the paths to its home?

Thou hast known -- for then thou art born And the number of thy days are many!

to cause it to rain on an uninhabited land, a desert where there are no human beings,

The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

Do you make Mazzaroth come out in its right time, or are the Bear and its children guided by you?

Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?

By whose wisdom are the clouds numbered, or the water-skins of the heavens turned to the earth,

When the dust is cast into a clod, and the lumps are bound together?

when they are crouched in the dens, [when] they lie in the thicket in an ambush?

Who gives in the evening the meat he is searching for, when his young ones are crying to God; when the young lions with loud noise go wandering after their food?

“Do you know the time when the wild goats of the rock give birth [to their young]?
Do you observe the calving of the deer?


“Can you count the months that they carry offspring,
Or do you know the time when they give birth?

They are bent down, they give birth to their young, they let loose the fruit of their body.

Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not unto them.

He ranges the mountains that are his pasture to search for anything green.

The wings of the ostrich wave proudly; But are they the pinions and plumage of love?

Will you even make my right of no value? will you say that I am wrong in order to make clear that you are right?


“Adorn yourself with eminence and dignity [since you question the Almighty],
And array yourself with honor and majesty.


Look at everyone who is proud, and humble him,
And [if you are so able] tread down the wicked where they stand.

He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.

He takes the produce of the mountains, where all the beasts of the field are at play.

He is covered by the branches of the trees; the grasses of the stream are round him.

Are your eyes looking to capture him, or to pierce his snout with a bridle?"

"Or, who hath given me anything afore hand, that I am bound to reward him again? All things under heaven are mine.

Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about.

His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.

They are close {to one another}-- even [the] air cannot come between them.
