I know and have been taught by the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean of itself: only to him that thinketh any thing unclean, to him it is unclean. But if thy brother be grieved by thy food, thou dost not herein walk in love. Do not by thy food destroy him, for whom Christ died. Let not your liberty then be evil-spoken of: for the kingdom of God consists not in meat and drink; read more.

Now as to things offered to idols, we know that we all have knowledge about them. Knowledge however puffeth up, but charity edifieth. And if any one be conceited of his knowledge, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know. But if any man love God, he is owned by Him. read more.
As to the eating therefore of things sacrificed to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one. For though there be some that are called Gods, whether in heaven or on earth, (as there are among the heathen gods many, and lords many,) yet to us there is but one God the Father, from whom are all things, and we in Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by Him. But there is not in all men this knowledge: and some with a consciousness of the idol unto this day, eat it as a thing sacrificed to an idol, and so their conscience being weak is defiled. But meat does not recommend us to God; for neither, if we eat, are we the better; nor the worse, if we eat not. But see that this liberty of yours be not by any means a stumbling-block to the weak. For if any one see thee, who hast knowledge, at table in an idol's temple, will not the conscience of him that is weak be encouraged to eat of the things sacrificed to idols? and so the weak brother, for whom Christ died, shall perish by thy knowledge? But in thus sinning against your brethren, and wounding their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ: wherefore if meat make my brother to offend, I will never eat flesh while I breathe, least I make my brother to offend.

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, flee from idolatry. I speak to you as to men of understanding: and judge ye what I say, ---The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? the bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? read more.

Let no one seek his own only, but every one another's benefit. Eat then whatever is sold in the shambles, asking no questions for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof: and if any of the unbelievers invite you to an entertainment, and ye have a mind to go, whatever is set before you, eat, asking no questions for conscience-sake. But if any one say to you, This hath been sacrificed to an idol,---eat it not; for his sake who informed thee, and for conscience-sake: for, as I said, the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof, so that thou mayst have food enough without it. Conscience I say, not thy own, but the other's; for why is my liberty to be judged by another man's conscience? And if I partake with thankfulness, why am I blamed for that, for which I give thanks? Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. Behave inoffensively both to the Jews, and to the Greeks, and to the church of God. Even as I also endeavour to please all men in all things, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.


If ye endure chastening, God treateth you as sons; for what son is there, whom the father doth not chastise? But if ye be without chastisement, of which all are partakers, then are ye bastards and not sons. But what saith the oracle of God to him? "I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal." And so in the present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. And if by grace, it is no more of works: for then grace is no longer grace. But if of works, it is no more grace: for then work is no longer work. What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he sought: but the elect have obtained it, and the rest were blinded, (according as it is written, God hath given them a spirit of slumber, that their eyes could not see and their ears could not hear,) even unto this day. And David saith, Let their table become a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling-block, and a recompence unto them. Let their eyes be darkened that they may not see, and always bow down their back. Say I then, Have they stumbled, that they should fall irrecoverably? God forbid! but this I say, that by their fall salvation is come to the Gentiles to excite them to emulation. Now if their fall be the riches of the world, and their diminution be the riches of the Gentiles, how much more will their fulness be? For I speak to you Gentiles: inasmuch indeed as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I extol my office, that if possible I may excite to emulation my brethren according to the flesh, and may save some of them: for if the rejecting of them be the reconciling of the world, what will the receiving them again be but life from the dead? Now if the first-fruits be holy, so is the whole heap: and if the root be holy, so are the branches. But if some of the branches were broken off, and thou a wild-olive wert grafted in among them, and art made a partaker together with them of the root and fatness of the olive; boast not against the branches:

Beloved, be not surprised at the fiery trial coming upon you, which is to try you, as if some strange thing befel you: but rejoice in that ye are partakers in the sufferings of Christ; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may also rejoice with exceeding joy.
