And Paul said, "John immersed with an immersion of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him coming after him; that is, on Jesus." And, having heard this, they were immersed into the name of the Lord Jesus; and, Paul having laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they were speaking with tongues, and prophesying.

For even as we have many members in one body, and all the members have not the same office; so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and severally members one of another. And, having gifts differing according to the grace that was given to us; whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of our faith; read more.
or ministry, let us labor in the ministry; or he that teaches, in teaching; or he that exhorts, in his exhortation; he that imparts, let him do it with liberality; he that presides, with diligence; he that shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

Now concerning the spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not wish you to be ignorant. Ye know that ye were gentiles, carried away to the dumb idols, as ye were led. Wherefore, I make known to you that no one speaking in the Spirit of God, says, "Jesus is accursed"; and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except in the Holy Spirit. read more.
Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are diversities of ministries, and the same Lord. And there are diversities of workings, but the same God, Who worketh all things in all. And to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for profiting. For to one, indeed, is given through the Spirit a word of wisdom; and to another, a word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit; to another, faith, in the same Spirit; and to another, gifts of healings, in the one Spirit; and to another, workings of mighty deeds; and to another, prophecy; and to another, discerning of spirits; to another, various kinds of tongues; and to another, interpretation of tongues. But all these worketh the one and the same Spirit, distributing to each one, severally, even as He willeth.

Wherefore, let him that speaks in a tongue, pray that he may interpret.

and to another, workings of mighty deeds; and to another, prophecy; and to another, discerning of spirits; to another, various kinds of tongues; and to another, interpretation of tongues.

Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?

Now I wish you all to speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy; and greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, unless he interpret, that the assembly may receive edifying.

What is it, then, brethren? When ye come together, each one of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edification. If any one speaks in a tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and in turn; and let one interpret; but, if there is no interpreter, let him keep silence in the assembly, and let him speak to himself and to God.

And they were amazed, and wondered, saying, "Behold, are not all these who are speaking Galilaeans? And how do we hear, each in our own language in which we were born;

in the power of signs and wonders, in the power of the Holy Spirit; so that from Jerusalem and around as far as Illyricum, I have fully dispensed the Gospel of Christ;

Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?

for they heard them speaking with tongues, and magnifying God. Then Peter answered,

And, when the day of Pentecost was being fulfilled they were all together in one place; and suddenly there came out of Heaven a sound, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues, as of fire, distributed among them; and it sat upon each one of them. read more.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, even as the Spirit was giving them to declare. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven; and, when this sound was heard, the multitude came together, and were greatly surprised, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed, and wondered, saying, "Behold, are not all these who are speaking Galilaeans? And how do we hear, each in our own language in which we were born; Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, in Judaea, and also Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Lybia about Cyrene, and sojourners from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans, and Arabians??e hear them speaking in our own languages the wonderful works of God?" And they were all amazed, and perplexed, saying one to another, "What does this mean?" And others, mocking, said, "They have been filled with new wine!" But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and declared to them, "Men of Judaea, and all those dwelling in Jerusalem, be this known to you, and give ear to my words; for these are not drunken, as ye suppose, for it is the third hour of the day; but this is that which was spoken through the prophet Joel: 'And it shall be in the last days', saith God, 'I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; yea, and on My servants and on My handmaidens in those days will I pour out of My Spirit, and they shall prophesy.

For he that speaks in a tongue speaks not to men, but to God; for no one understands; but in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he that prophesies speaks to men to edification and exhortation and comfort. He that speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but he that prophesies edifies the assembly. read more.
Now I wish you all to speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy; and greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, unless he interpret, that the assembly may receive edifying. And now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you, either in revelation, or in knowledge, or in prophesying, or in teaching? Even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, if they give no distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? For even if a trumpet give an uncertain sound, who will prepare for war? So also ye, unless through the tongue ye give intelligible speech, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye will be speaking into the air! There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and no one of them is without signification. If, then, I know not the meaning of the voice, I will be to him who is speaking a barbarian; and he that is speaking, a barbarian to me. So also ye, since ye are eager for spiritual gifts, seek that ye may abound in them with a view to the edification of the assembly. Wherefore, let him that speaks in a tongue, pray that he may interpret. For, if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it, then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also; I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. Else, if you are blessing with the spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the "Amen" at your giving of thanks, since he knows not what you say? For you, verily, give thanks well, but the other is not edified. I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all; but in an assembly I prefer to speak five words with my understanding, that I may instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

In the law it has been written, "With other tongues, and with lips of others, I will speak to this people; and not even thus will they listen to Me," saith the Lord. Therefore, the tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe, but to the unbelieving; but prophecy is a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to those who believe. If, therefore, the whole assembly comes together, and all are speaking with tongues, and there come in those who are unlearned or unbelieving, will they not say that ye are mad? read more.
But, if all prophesy, and there come in one who is unbelieving or unlearned, he is convicted by all, he is judged by all: the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so, falling on his face, he will worship God, reporting that, in reality, God is among you.

So then, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
