And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he would not hearken to our voice: how will he then be grieved, if we tell him that the child is dead? So Absalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there three years. And the soul of king David longed to go forth to Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead.
And it was told to Joab, Behold, the king weepeth and mourneth for Absalom. And the victory that day was turned into mourning to all the people: for the people heard it said that day how the king was grieved for his son. And the people withdrew by stealth that day into the city, as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle. read more.

For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.
